EVENING STAR. | CROSBY 8. HOYES....... Editor. Largest Circalation in the Distric Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: _ THURSDAY. November 6, 1873. The Baltimore correspondent of the New York Timez charges that frauds of the most glaring character were perpetrated in the first- named city at the election of Tuesday, and that in many instances colored men hamden the vil of voting. The same aut ity places the ton peckenemaer! colored men disfranchised ‘on that day at 5,000. The cry of fraud is com- | mon after every election, but it does not always | follow that such a charge can be substantiated by proof. In this particular case, however, one | charge at least is of a specific character—that | “im one ward alone, where one registration of- ficer was a candidate for the legislature, 119 | names of colored voters were strack from the | books by him.” Now, if the correspondent wili come forward and give the name of the candi- date who he alleges violated the law, his charges will doubtless be thoroughly investigated. A Baltimore correspondent of the New York Ere- © ning Post, however, commends the minnar in which the election was comincted, and says it might be emulated with advantage by New York city. He says the pollsin Baltimore are much more respectable than in New York, | where they are in many cases a disgrace to the | city. and in reference to the colored men on last | election day says | “f observed many colored men around with tickets. They seemed to have equal privileges with the whites, ‘none daring to make them afraid,’ and the policemen lounging about told me that at all the voting places the colored people had as free access to the polls as any others.” ——— noe ‘There is an odd war going on between the | New York Herald and Nast, the artut. Nast opened the fight by some very effective carica- tures of Young Jim Bennett and his Cw-sar busi- ness, and the Herald in retort gives whole columns of its paper to the adroit depreciation | of Nast. One of its strokes, in this way, wasto | Start a subscription in behalf of Nast as an im. | pecunious artist, and the country papers have | taken the matter in sober earnest and are fully | impressed with the idea that the renowned | caricaturist is in an exceedingly seedy and im- poverished conditio: On the whole, however, Nast has the best of it, for he has effectually laughed the Cwsarism absurdity out of the col- umuns of the Herald. Now if he would only bring his sharp pencil to bear to puncture the Herald's new tediousness, the chief justicesip interview | business, he would earn the thanks of a suffer- | ing publi se0e According $0 the Mobile Register, they must bave intelligent furor ‘‘ way down in Ala- bama.” That journal is authority for saying that a jury ima late civil suit brought in a ver- ict, “‘ manslaughter in the first degree!” The foreman explained, in delivering the verdict, that as no one was killed they thought it better to bring in a verdict of manslaughter instead of murder. The suit was a claim for $500 on some business transaction, and there was nothing criminal in connection with the case. This is a remarkable story, but we suspect the Register is given to joking. The New York Express notes a reduction on the prices before the panic ot four cents per pound on smoked hams, two cents on fresh pork, two cents on corned! beef, four cents on pork sausages, two centson lard, two cents on Bologna sausages, «ditto on tnpe, lamb and sutton, three cents on butter, one cent on cheese, four cents on turkies, seven cents on chickens and two cents on butter. Our Wash- ington provision dealers have doubtless reduced their prices to suit the times, and it would bring them custom to advertise the fact. <2 —___ The parties in Huntington, Long Island, who tarred, maltreated and murdered the man Kel- sey, have undertaken the transparent farce of sending one of their number, named Banks, to the pineries of Minnesota in quest of the mur- dered man, professing that they had received information that he was concealed there. Or course, they knew well enough that their dead | victim could not be there, and the trick was quite evidently devised to give the impression that they believe him to be alive, and therefore could not be guilty of his murder. —-<e2-_____ Helmbold still lives, and has a card in the | for London Cosmopolitan, dated Langham Hotel, in | fer deta which he complains of the sturs passed upon | him by the New York Herald in calling Jay Cooke & Co. and Henry Clews & Co. “Buchu Bankers.” Helmbold says he ‘‘has still a name ahd @ property to protect,” and that he hax | | who did not register or ‘vot ‘ashington at the last election, will pleese call and reafeier their doné a gui deal for the newspapers through his | Rag Bad 3d strate Cope ay anis avenue, between 24 advertising. The newspapers did a good deal | or him, per advertising, would be fhe proper way to put it. In San F Francisco—not Washington, the | | “Special” libelers of this district will please bear in mind—the public schools are in a bad way. ‘The members of the board of education are charged with exacting pay from the teachers for the positions they secure them; and also with making a fat thing of it by sharing the exorbi- tant profits of furnitare contractors. “Sic Semper Tyrannis tory!” Republicanism meets its Sedan!” “Bichmond Recaptured !"" “Norfoik Redeem. ea!” “Another Petersburg Crater!” ‘Naval Victory at Portsmouth!” “The War Carried into Africa!” “Carry the News to Hiram!” is the way it affects the Kichmond Enjuirer. eens BECUBLIOARS, WP | Chaii west Ketrat the.
