Fain Pray. 6 severe Blows ee ees A Rep Hor Lamp Poat—How it Burned a Policeman and Warmed up the Loafers.—This morning Policeman Dyson, of the 6th precinct, reported to the station that there was ‘a lamp post on fre” on the corner of 7th and I streets. ‘This st.ange announcement rather staggered his companions, and Lieut. inspection of the com) be was not drunk, asked him what be meant, when turning about, he presented to the gaze of bis questioner a streak of singed coat extending from collar to tail; while at same time a series of squirms of his person a ruefal countenance, convinced those present that he had been uncomfortably warmed up. Lieut. Eckloff with others pro- ceeded to the place indicated and found the iron lamp post nearly red hot. On farther nvestigation it was discovered that « hole haa been drilled through one side to the interior, and looking through this a blaze of fire was secn rushing up through the hollow part of the post with abuzzingsound. Attached tothe lamp post was a letter box, which was also quite hot. It appears that the under ground joint at the foot of the post had sprung a leak from the care- lessness of the laborers in digging on the street mprovement, and that the gasescaping through the post had.'by some means, become ignited, possibly by some lounger lighting his pipe by striking a match on the post. Policeman Dy- son says that after he got singed leaning up igainst it, his curiosity led him to keep an eye on others, and he had the satisfaction of seeing several men approach the post for a comfortable lean or talk and eudden!y dance about and swap their fingers with pain. riated individual en touching it jumped about twice his length and went headlong int» the gutter. ut. Evklof notified the gas company and n were sent to extinguish the lamp post and p the leak. a INTERRUPTION TO TkaveEL.—The accident to the railroad bridge over Occoquan creek, at Woodbridge, mentioned in yesterday's Gazelle, turns out to have been of a more serious char- acter than at first reported. it is now under- stood that one of the piers has given away, and as the bridge is 75 feet high, pedestrians even wi'l not now attempt to cross it. All the trains on the A.& F.R.R. have of course stopped running, and the southern mail and passengers are now carried at night, as well as during the One i day, by the Quantico steamers.
