“EVENING STAR. CROSBY 5. NOYES. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. | » WEDNES! HINGTON CITY: October 15, 1878 The State Elections Yesterday. Elections were held in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Iowa yesterday. Inthe first named state the election was fora judge of the suprems court, a state treasurer, one-third of the mem- bers of the state senate, arid a full house of rep- resentatives. The republicans elected their state ticket by a large majority and a majority of their candidates for the legislature. The campaign was a spiritless one and the vote light "The new judge of the supreme court elected is Hon. Isaac G. Gordon, and the new state treas- ures Robert W. Mackey. In Oblo the contest was a little more ani- mated, the election being for governor and state officers and members of the next legis- lature, which will select a successor to Senator ‘Thurman. The contest was a close one, and the republicans claim the election of their et, with General Edward F. Noyes as governor. The democrats, on the other hand, claim the election of both thetr state and legis- lative ticket. The republicans concede the elect the democrats of a majority of their candidates for the legislature. The complexion of the lature cannot be definitely ascer- taine morrow or Friday, as it depends on the result in Hamilton county, which elects thirteen members. In this county there were four different tickets, and a great deal of “‘seratching” was done, and the result will Probably be that a few of each ticket will be elected. It is barely possible that the liberals Will elect enough members in this county to bold the balance of power between the repub- licans and democrats. lowa, which elected state officers and a new legislature, was carried by from 30,000 to 40,000 majority, notwithstanding the democrats styled themselves ~‘anti-monopolists.” The plat- forms of both parties were strong in denunciation of monopoly, and consequently there was no issue between the partieson that subject, republican grangers voting the repubii- can, and democratic grangers the democratic ticket. In Oregon, where an election was held for member of Congress, James W. Nesmith, the eemocratic nominee, was elected by about 1,000 majority. From Indiana, where there wasan election for judges of some of the subordinate courts, noth- ing has been heard. sees — The President's Financial Views. In the recently published statement embody- ing the views of the President on the financial situation it was stated that he said ‘he intend- ed to recommend positive authority to reissue the $45,000,000 of legal tender reserve.” An. orrespondent who has since conversed President on the same subject, says he esident) was surprised that his language construed as being favorable to ex- Pansion. and that what he really meant to say Was that asa diversity of opinion exists as to the right of the Treasury to issue any portion of the reserve, ail doubts should be removed by a | | were tremendously FINANCIAL AND CON MERCIAL, What might be called the tail of the pate strock financial | Socks down with a run. circles land streets | excited for a while, and it actually seemed at one time as if there were no bottom to the market. Joint resolution of Congress. “His parpose was to direct attention to this fact and ask Congress to settle, by positive legislation, the right of the Secretary of the Treasury to consider $11,000,000 as a reserve to be temporarily draw! on only as actual indebtedness made it neces: sary for him to do so in paying the de- mands made upon his department. This might j be regarded as favoring expansion, but he was convinced that without such a reserve the Treasury wonk! at times be in the con- dition of some of the national banks, and obliged to suspend currency payment.” The New York Evening Post, of yesterday, prints a letter addressed by the President on the 6th imstant to Mr. N. A. Cowdrey, of the Continental Bank of New York, in which financial matters are discussed, and the Presi- dent's previously expressed views reiterated: He states that he does not believe the late panic will work to individuals half the injury it wil! work general good to the country. He says our monetary system is the creation of necessity; that it has no elasticity, but that in other respects it is the best that has ever been de- vised. He adds:—No one now distrusts the value of his paper dollar; on the contrary, it is seized and hoarded with the same avidity now that the gold dollar has been in former like adversities. The panic will call attention to the defects in our mone- tary system; and will, no donht, lead to legislation to relieve the want of elasticity. In reference to the aimost unlimited amount of silver now being produced by the mines, the President suggests to bankers aud others that they put it in cireulation anti: it is Sxed, and then we will find other markets. He calls attention to the fact that the South and Central American states have asked us to coin money for them, and hopes Congress will give the gov- ermment authority to doso, when we will become the manufacturer of this currency, with a profit, and will probably secure a portion of our pay in the more precious metal. o-—_ ‘The people of the District.of Colambia hare ain signified at the polls their continued sup- port of the national and local administrations; the result of the election here yesterday for twenty-one members of the House of Delegates being another great triumph for the progressive men of the national capital. The vote is an w citizens of the Governor and Board of Publie | Works, and the improvements in progress under their direction; as of the successfal candidates all, with perhaps one exception, are cordially in sympathy with the men who have taken upon themselves the task of making the capital city worthy of the nation. The vote yesterday is therefore another and a deserved rebuke to | those who are endeavoring by their wilful mis- representations to block the wheels of progress | and impair the credit of the District govern- ment. +2ee- ‘We publish to-day President Grant's procla- mation for a day of national thanksgiving and Prayer, fixing therefor Thursday, the 27 in advance to give the opportunity to governors Of the several states to designate the same day, 80 as to avoid conflicting appointments such as were made by some of the governors last year. ‘The President refers to the abundant harvests, general good health of the people and peace at home and abroad as among the mercies for which “it becomes us as a people to return heartfelt and grateful acknowledgments, and with our thanksgiving for blessings we may unite prayers for the cessation of local and tem- porary sufferings.” —++0e- It seems to be quite clear that great injustice ‘was done to his wife by Conway, the assailant of Ex-Senator Pomery,in the webeadbery made Just after the shooting, that Mr. P. ‘had ruined his wife and family. We have reliable testi- mony from all quarters to the effect that Mrs ‘Conway is a most exemplary woman in every respect, and that there did not and docs not exist the slightest ground for the imputation conveyed by the remark quoted above, and which we are assured is entitled to such weight only &5 would be attached to the hasty excuse given for a criminal act or the expression of an un- found mind th of | November. The close of another year brings with it the occasion for renewed thanksgiving and acknowledgment to the Almighty Ruler of the Universe for the unnumbered mercies which ‘He has bestowed upon us. Abundant harvests have been among the re- wards of industry. With local exceptions health hasbeen among the many blessings enjoyed. Tranquillity at home and peace with ether ma- tions have prevailed. Frugal industry ts re- gaining its merited recognition and its merited rewards, Gradually, but, under the providence of God, surely, as we trust, the nation is recove: from the lingering resulta of # dreadfal civil strife. Fer these and all the other mercies vouchsafed it becomes us as s people to return heartfelt and grateful acknowledgments, and with eur thanks- giving for blessings we may unite prayers for the cessation of local and temporary sufferings. | I, therefore, recommend that on Tharsday, the twenty-seventh day of November next, the ship, te make their acknowledgments to Al- mighty God for His bounties amd His protection, and to offer to Him prayers for their continu- ance.
