_EVENING STAR. _ Largest Circulation in on in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. | WASHIN ‘GTON CITY: TUESDAY +» October 11, 1873. ‘The special correspondents who have recent- ly amused themselves by eending hence state- ments to the effect that the public schools of this city had been closed, and who have attri- buted their closing to the action of the Gover- nor and the Board of Public Works, may per. Daps obtain some comfort from the following facts and Bgures. The official records show that at the end of September, 1sT2, the number of pupils in the white public schools of this city was 7,003. At the end of October the number was7,0TT, the highest number reached at any time during the last school year. The schools closed in June with 6,673 puptis on the roll. At the end of September, 1 the current school year, the number on the roll was an increase of 952 over the cor- responding wonth last year. The following ta- bie shows the increase in the ,several school districts for September, 1573, over September, Inere : To which sh i be added 2) pupils in the Normal School, and we have an increase of ‘The average number in each school in the city, a5 against 52.7 last year. , the average number in each sehool during last month was as follows :—First district, 61,7 second district, 61.6; third district, 567; fourth district he per cent. of attendance during the month was as follows :— First distr 1; second district, 96.7; third district, 95.7; fourth district, % ‘These figures would not seem to indicate that our schools have suffered, or are auifering in Any manner, under our present form of govern- ment. On the contrary, it is doubtful whether ‘Any city in the country can show a more marked improvement and increase. Superintendent Wilson, who bas been actively connected with ©ur public school system for over twelve years, has pronounced the month just closed the best school month that has ever been known here, and an examination of official records will Prove him to be correct in that statement The Case of Senator Mitchell of | Oregon. Unfortunately for Senator Mitchell, of the story of his early life was “ex- t atime when for want of any larger nm the whole pross of the country was at leisure to make the most of it in the way of pic- news, and elaborate moralizing. his case took a prominence quite tion to his faults; judging him as are judged, liable to haman frailties. one time, as if despite his con- ies he must succumb, and be crushed out from public life, but later a reaction has come, and it is held to be only just to offset the hon- orable record of his years of discret! mn against sof his youth. This is evidently the his own state where he is b- known. at the republican state conveution of September ion Lith, alitied betief that by his many + upright and honorable con and that tg ty, but a larg: ate, have ntire e Md ability and patriotism, and that y and ably represent them in te. the peor le of thi in his inte; he will fa the United States Se; Capt. Hall and His Detractors Col. James Lupton in a letter to the New York Herald deals a sharp and apparently well deserved rebuke to Dr. David Walker, the par- tizan of Dr. Bessel, for his “scurrilous (charac- teristic) communication” in which he charges the heroic dead (Capt. Hall) with bad temper, quarrelsomeness, jealous disposition, and pro- janity. Col. Lupton says in this connection: “I had known the late Captain Hall inti- mately and well for crenty years; had been watchfully observant of bim in the most diverse relations and vicis-itudes of tact 9 Arn = un- der excitement, wh. n aggri d upon, stabbed in the back Cog aie te ‘riend or sorely tried. A littie further on the Doctor categorically = “IT can vouch for Hall cursing In twenty years I never heard cath or @ profane word fall from Hall’s lips, nor do I believe that any mortal man ever did.
