_EVENING STAR. _ Largest Circulation in on in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. | WASHIN ‘GTON CITY: TUESDAY +» October 11, 1873. ‘The special correspondents who have recent- ly amused themselves by eending hence state- ments to the effect that the public schools of this city had been closed, and who have attri- buted their closing to the action of the Gover- nor and the Board of Public Works, may per. Daps obtain some comfort from the following facts and Bgures. The official records show that at the end of September, 1sT2, the number of pupils in the white public schools of this city was 7,003. At the end of October the number was7,0TT, the highest number reached at any time during the last school year. The schools closed in June with 6,673 puptis on the roll. At the end of September, 1 the current school year, the number on the roll was an increase of 952 over the cor- responding wonth last year. The following ta- bie shows the increase in the ,several school districts for September, 1573, over September, Inere : To which sh i be added 2) pupils in the Normal School, and we have an increase of ‘The average number in each school in the city, a5 against 52.7 last year. , the average number in each sehool during last month was as follows :—First district, 61,7 second district, 61.6; third district, 567; fourth district he per cent. of attendance during the month was as follows :— First distr 1; second district, 96.7; third district, 95.7; fourth district, % ‘These figures would not seem to indicate that our schools have suffered, or are auifering in Any manner, under our present form of govern- ment. On the contrary, it is doubtful whether ‘Any city in the country can show a more marked improvement and increase. Superintendent Wilson, who bas been actively connected with ©ur public school system for over twelve years, has pronounced the month just closed the best school month that has ever been known here, and an examination of official records will Prove him to be correct in that statement The Case of Senator Mitchell of | Oregon. James Lupton in a letter to the New York Herald deals a sharp and apparently well deserved rebuke to Dr. David Walker, the par- tizan of Dr. Bessel, for his “scurrilous (charac- teristic) communication” in which he charges the heroic dead (Capt. Hall) with bad temper, quarrelsomeness, jealous disposition, and pro- janity. Col.
