EVENING STAR. | | CROSBY 8. NOTES. Largest Cirenlation in-the District. Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHIN vGTON CITY: -. Qetober MONDAY... 13, 1873. Our District election comes off to-morrow, and this is of course the proper occasion for = few Inst words to voters. We don’t feel called upon, however, to infict any homilies upon this much-suffering class. It is always in order, though, to urge the supportof the best men; and it isevident that a considerable improve- ‘ment can be made upon the isst House of Dele- gates. The preference should be given to hon- est, intelligent men, of pablic spirit, identified with the interests of the District, and who are not ‘‘on the grab,” and have no selfish schemes eo to further. Where the qualifications of the candidates are equal, the preference shoald be given to those who cam be of the most service to the District with a republican Con- gress. It would be the height of folly, in a busi- nest way, to elect a set of sore-headi pable only of pulling down, and having no capacity for building up. It would be equally unwise to elect an assembly of Bourbon politicians of the class who learn nothing and forget nothing, and who would oceupy themselves with flaunting their party red rag in the face of the majority in Congress. Neither do we want extremists of any kind, neither ram-rod prohibitionists on the one hand, or those on the other who would sweep away all laws regulating the liquor traffic. But we need straightforward, capable men having no particular isms, bat able to deal with any question fairly om its merite as presented. s2oe- The October Elections. ‘The October elections come to-morrow, the two most important being those in Iowa and Ohio, where governors and state officers are to be elected. The tickets in these states are as follows: IN onto. Republican. Democrat. Independent. Governor. Edw'd F. Noyes. Wm. Allen, Isaac Collins. Lieutenant Governor. Alphonso Hart. Bar’bas Burns. A. 9. Piatt. -Fustices of Jnpreme Conrt. Wm. White, H.C. Whitman, P. B. Ewing, Walt. F. Stone, C. H.Scribner, D.W.C.Lou jon Attorney General. Jobn Little. ~M.A.Dougherty, Sera’m Meyer, State Treasurer. Isaac Welsh. Geo. Weimer. J. Harshman. Controller of Treasury. Wm. F. Wilson. J.K.Newcomer. G. P. L.Butler Member of Board of Public Works. P. V. Herzing. Chris. Schunck. Jas. McBeth. | Im towa. Republican. Opposition. jovernor. a b Cyrus C. Carpenter. Jacob G. Vale. Lieutenant poptigen es Joseph Dysart. . E. Whiting. Judge of epee Court. Joseph M. Beck Benjamin J. Hall. Superintendent of Public Instraction. | Alonzo Abernethy. David W. Prindie. Pennsylvania elects a judge of the supreme court, a state treasurer and a legislature. The | candidates for state officers are Republican. Democrat. udge of Supreme Court. Isaac G. Gordon. mes R. Ludlow. State Treasurer. Robert W. Mackey Francis W. Hutchinson In Oregon there is a congressman to elect to filla vacancy. Hiram Smith is the republican and James W. Nesa the democratic candi- ate. Indiana also h an election for circuit judges, bat the questions decided will have no political significance In both Iowa and Ohio the canvas is compli- ated with side issues, the farmers’ movemen railroad matters, &c.; but is not apparent | which party will lose most by these off-shoots. | From present appearances the republicans will carry both states, though there may be a con- siderable falling off in the vote. In Pennsylvania and Oregon the chances | seem to be rather in favor of the democrats. es } The Western people don't know what to make | k Of the several weeks profound silence and se- | elusion of General Bd@er, and the Louisville Courier-Journal professes to have information that he has resolved to retire from worldly pur- suits and ‘ assnme the charge of Dr. Newman's old church in Washington.” As a matter of fact, Gen. Butler is in Washington, overflowing with vitality, pugnacity, deviltry, versatility, subtlety, and all the other forces, powers and capabilities that go to make him the most con- spicuy™ Man in the countr>. i46 will let of a | little surplns steam In some cases he has before the Supreme Court, but will have @ full head on when Congress meets, as any small craft that come “fooling around” in his track will find to their cost. The Cincinnati Commercial takes a proud and Proper stand. It mikiiy but firmly declines to Publish the lists of rallying and challenging committees gratis, and turns the namerous Political patriots who are ready to rally and challenge over to its advertising colums, “where they can enjoy themselves.” The Commercial position in regard to gratuitous political ad- vertising can be very properly taken by the | Presselsewhere. Newspapers have been sponged | about long enough by local politicians in the | way of free printing. Ta Stan long ago es- tablished the rule that matter of this kind mast seek access to the paper only over the adver- tising counter. The Chicago Infer-Occan Nifts its voice in re- buke of “the everlasting clatter about Andrew Jobnson and the hanging of Mrs. Surratt.” It isnot deniea anywhere that Mrs. Surratt is dead, and there is no good seen in disturbing her memory with vexatious discussions as to whether or not Mr. Johnson would have pardoned her if | he had known that the military commission | which tried her wanted him to. She was not pardoned, and that is sufficient. he unpopularity of Mr. Green, the New York campaneiee, is occasioned by his unswery- | ing fidelity. Mr. Aristides, some time ago, was disliked because he was honest, and the people issued a mandamus commanding him to de- | part.—Hostan Post. ‘Will the New York Sum, Tribune and World please look after the reputation of their home city. They have a fashion of busying them- selves with other people's motes, quite oblivioug | of their own beams. 0ee ‘We have ay ations daily for back numbers | of the STAR, and are seldom able to supply the | want. The only sure way to get the paper is to | subscribe for it. ¥.-RIDGELY ENCAMPMENT. | —A fall aitendance .t req he | reraiar wher TUESDAY EVENING, 10h | natant to consiter important ca BA.
