To-day. ‘The tidal wave spreading ‘com New York has reached the extreme South and the far Wes*. To-day we have news of farther suspensions in both direc’ is, including some of the national banks of Chicago. In Baltimore, the leading stock dealing firm of William Fisher & Sons bes gone under. In this city the banking house of Fant, Washington & Co., has suspended. Thus far, it will be seen, none of the failures bave been of mercantile men, and, unless the pressure should be greatly increased, it is prob- able that this class will be able to get through unerippled, though naturally thes must suffer from the interruption to business and business facilities from the panic. To New York, where the panic originated, we must look for the revulsion which shall bring about a more hope- ful state of affairs, and that secms to be already commenced. The reports from there to-day are Teassuring, as showing that through business 1s torpid, there are no new failures, and affairs are gradually getting in train for the better. Baltimore took the financial ball coolly by the horns and resolved, in view of the action taken by the banks of New York city and elsewhere, that the Associated Banks of Baltimore would be permitted to certify ail checks presented for payment; all checks 80 certitied to be payable only through the Clearing House; and that cur- Tency would be paid out only in such amounts as might be deemed necessary by each individ- ual bank.
