EVENING STAR. ‘x S. NOYES. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: ‘At the monthly meeting yesterday of the @irectors of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad company, it was stated by Vice President King that advices had been received trom Presi- dent Garrett, announcing the negotiation of £1,000,000 of the company’s six per cent. ster- ing bonds, by Messrs. Baring, Brothers & Co., of London, being the remainder of the £2,000,000 authorized. The price obtained (964) was regarded as very satisfactory, especially in view of the general want of success which had recently attended negotiations of American railway securities abroad. The loan was taken in a single day, the offers being for more than £2,000,000 at the price named. The revenue of the Baltimore and Ohio road and branches, including the Ohio divisions, for August, 1573, amounted to $1,414,56v.60, being an increase of $152,748.32 as compared with August, 1872. The revenue for the quarter ended 3ist August, 1573, for Baltimore and Ohio railroad and branches, including the Ohio divisions, was $4,113,483.17, being an increase of $423,527.94 as compared with the corresponding period of last year. A New York telegram to-day states that Prof. Wire is all in the dumps about the proposed balloon trip, and it is quite evident he does not FPopose to embark on the trans-Atlantic voyage. In this he exhibits commendable prudence, but at the same time he must expect that the inquiry will be raised why hisdoubts did not come sooner. He Gnds fault at the last moment with many of the arrangements for the voyage, but it would appear to the ordinary observer that where the whole project is one of such imsane risk to life, it is hardly worth while splitting hairs as to the comparative advantage or disadvantage of this or that point of detail. The Messrs. Goodsell, proprietors of the Graphic, have spent aliberalsumof money in Providing everything considered essential for the experiment by the xronautic experts, and the failure, if failure there be, caunot justly be charged upon them. It will be remembered that a correspondent of Tus STaR who has known Wise well, predicted some time ago that his latest trans-Atlantic flourish would end just &s all the preceding ones did. ———_-~ee ‘The London Daily Telegraph deals at consider- able length with the subject of cheap pusta ze, and argues that the annual deficit in our postal revenue is attributable to the fact that we are essentially a telegraphing, rather than a writ- ing, people; and states that, if the proportion of telegrams to letters be closely scanned, it will be found that, in spite of the cheapness‘of post- age and the dearness of electricity, more wire messages and fewer letters are relatively sent im the United States than in any other great civilized nation. It commends the abolition of the franking privilege, and encourages Mr. Creswell in his determination to make the post- office both self-supporting and remunerative; but thinks that, owing to the national high- Pressure nature, and our enormous extent of territory, the post-office has little chance of competing successfully with the telegraph, especially in view of the fact that the telegraph corporations have an unlimited power m the lobbies of Congress. The only remedy it sees is 8 persistent onslaught upon private telegraphy, and for the state to work the wires no less than the post. This is the way the Trans-Alleghany Canal convention strikes the Baltimore American “Some enthusiastic gentlemen who are in favor of now completing the original desiga of the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, which was to carry it ecm to a connection with the Ohio river, lay assembled in convention at Cum! listened to a vast amount of eloquence, logic and statistics upon the subject. = wee conclusively proven to the satisfaction one that such an enterprise is impera- lemanded by the welfare of Maryland ennsylvania, and that the whole west has cemne intimate concern in opening a water communication with the Atlantic coast as a tir Te ent, and having irresistibly @ convention, of course, gravely Senntved that the ernment must do the work and pay the bill. A committee wag inted to besiege Co }, and the conve: adjourned with a seren® faith in the future. ‘This project seems to have been revived only Fee bat pian standing and influence of the mem’ of the Gonvention is evidence that they are ia earnest, aon if there is any- thing anil Be is that any fatare Condens will Taub onongh to hand $20,000,009 . The canal mania — now bitten timate labors.” -20e- By the report of President Gorma Gorman at the monthly meeting of the Chesapeake and Ohio anal company yesterdsy, it seems that the tonnage of last month was 48,305 tons—a decrease, compared with August, 1572, of 56,434 tons. The accrued revenue of the month was $2,178.81a decrease of $3,639.12. These figuree speak for themselves. So much fer political management of canals. —_———_-+e2--____ Gov. Sam Bard is out with the first number of his new weekly paper, the Atlanta New Era. The Governor heads his salutatory ‘No Saluta- tory,” and declares that the Zra will be “the accredited mouth-piece of the Great National Bepublican party.” Prof. Wise and other wronauts of the “trans-Atlantic balloon excursion” have been named balloonatics; but they are evidently not 80 crazy as they might be.
