EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8S. NOYES....... Editor. Reading Matter on Every Page. | Fst ed WASHINGTON CITY: WEDPNYSDAY.....September 10, 1973. —=a Newsraren ADVERTISING. the Louisville (Ky.) Couri anybody advertises in newspapers, and gives the following sound and simple answer as to why business people advertise and the principle of advertising:—‘Obviously this, that the ad- vertiser wants his ‘wants’ ‘wants’ to sell goods; that he ‘wants’ to hire a ‘help;’ that he wants either assistamce or cus- tom, which, in his own private walk in life, he cannot readily come up with. Why, then, does headvertise? Because he cannot come up with Very well; were should he advertise in order to give himself the best show? Certainly in that advertiving sheet which is read by the great- eat number of people.” <0 The business outlook of this season is con- sidered rather favorable. = has experienced for the last year have helped to change the style of living, and made people more economical in luxury, as shown by the decrease of importa- tions. The enormous aggregate of onr foreign imports for a number of years has kept the country constantly and deeply in debt, but there is now a notable falling off in the con- sumption of foreign articles, as shown by the imports of dry g ds at the port of New York for eight months from January 1, 1873, as com- pared with the similar period in 1872. A falling off of nearly $29,000,000 from the imports of Isf2isshown. The large buyers of the country who are now laying in their fall stocks are se- curing fall selling stocks only, and are making no speculative purchases. The state of the fall trade and the general prosperity of the coun- try of course depend tent of the crops and the prices the vari- ous productions of the farm will command, The Chicago In‘er-Ocean, in reviewing the field, thinks that thongh in some sections the grain crop promises to be # partial failure, the aggre- gate production will not fall far below the aver- age, and there is every promise that breadstuffs of all kinds will command a higher price. What the extent of the advance may be it is hard to determine, as this, of curse, will be governed by circumstances not yet fully developed: but that the gross sum realized by the producers for this year’s crop will be far in advance of the Teceipts for las. year, appears very probable. There is the same promise regarding cotton, the prices already showing an upward tenden- cy. The visible supply shows a decrease over last year of 100.457 bales. In view of the fact that the current year’s crop in the United while there are some Grawbacks to the prodaction in other coun- tries, the cotton ontlook is encouraging. There are also indications of an easier money Besides the payment of the $15,000,000 Geneva award, which in itself would have a the stringency, there are $15,000,000 of national bank currency sub- scribed for by new banks but not yet taken up; and the Comptroller has given notice that if this is not called for at onee it will be distribu- ted to other banks. It is the prevailiug opinion that the worst of our embarrassment is past, and that the transactions of the fall will show the country to be recovered from its temporary “ander this head ~Journal asks why The hard times the matters of mere largely on the ex- States promises well, ———_~cee-—____ It is said that the active competition for cus- tom by the western railroads is working a won- erful revolution for the benefit of passengers, causing the railroad officials to treat them with as Yer x Be ‘Sbwgeas, isk Largest Circulation in the District! ? The conductors are even reminded by official regulations that their man- ners towards passengers must be amended, as shown bythe following paragraph : “ Treat people as if you appreciated and were wilting to acknowledge their custom. Try to accommodate and please. business man would toward his customers. n't treat people as if you were conferring & favor on them by letting them ride.” Now we would suggest to hotel Proprietors that this paragraph would read remarkably well in a set of regulations issued for the instruction of their gorgeous clerks. We think the pub- lic would be very apt—other things being equal— to patronize a house where such regulations were enforced. In short, act as any In a lecture the other night in Boston, the Rev. Henry Morgan came to the defence of “Ol Maids.” He maintained that ola maids are the only incarnation of the Gospel, the only Isa young woman neat and tidy, she has the traits of an imperturbable Is she frugal in her expenses, neat and exact in her domestic concerns; does the cat bave a cushion and the canary a bathing-dish— sad thought, that humanity of hers is the sure characteristic of an old maid. He went on to enumerate the interesting and voluminous cata- logue of virtues peculiarly the property of old maiddom, and pointed to the still patent fact that the old maid, however edifying in life and spotless in death, is refused the absolution of society for the ‘unpardonable sin” of her single state, and this, too, in states where there are 20,000 more females than males, and in Massa- ehusette, where there are 50,000 more. angels left on earth. ‘The democrats are “disbanding” as a party out West. There were forty-five counties (out of one hundred and two) in Illinois giving dem- ocratic majorities last year. A careful analysis shows tbat in just twelve of these counties the democrats have nominated; in sixteen they bave, with due formality, disbanded their or- ganizations, in eight counties conventions have been called, the result of which is expected be, in most cases, to disband; and in the remain- ing nine counties the situation is described as one of “ sublime unfixedness.” The democratic papers do not draw much consolation from the Maine election. Thus the Baltimore Gaectte. ‘Maine is evidently still joined to her idols.
