EVENING STAR. CROSBY 5S. NOYES....... Editor, ee ——— Largest Cirenlation in the District | WASHINGTON CITY: HONDAY............ September 1, 1873. Copying the article in Tue Sram of last Wednesday, advocating the change of name of Georgetown to West Washington, the Courier of that place says “If the change ts to be made—and nearly all business men here admit the necessity of it—iet the name be simply, Washington.” Perhaps that is better than ‘West Washington, as expressing the idea of a more perfect union. The same paper quotes the organic act, to show that Congress contin- ues in it the name of the city of Georgetown. ‘True, but at the same time that act does just what Tax Stax said it did, namely—“virtually abolished Georgetown a a distinct community with separate interests,” by wiping out the old municipal governments, and putting the two cities under the same local administration, thus leaving to Georgetown nothing of its indrvidu- ality except the name. The Courier hopes Congressional action to perfect the work of con- Solidation by a legal change of name will take place early next session. In this connection we have to suggest that while the Board of Public Works have done much by the improvement of the streets leading to the bridges across Kock Creek to abolish the physical dividing line between Washington and Georgetown, they might make the union more complete by arching a portion of the creek. That stream might be made to ran in 8 straight line from the P street bridge to the M street bridge. This would perhaps necessitate tunnelling under the high blaffs on the Wash- ington side. At the first glance it looks lixe too expensive a scheme to be seriously con®idered; but then it must be borne in mind that as the cities grow—or city grows, as we should prefer to write it—a bridge will be necessary at every street crossing the stream. The expense of these with the retaining wails which will become necessary to enable the ground to be utilised to the waters edge will be very considerable. By the plan above suggested enough more land would be reclaimed to go far towards paying the expense of thearching. It may not be expedient to commence such an improvement at this time; Dut we suggest it now, in order that it may be considered in connection with any improve- ments in progress or in contemplation along the banks of the creek creek. —ss0e- The statistics o of the foreign and domestic trade of Baltimore for the month of August Jast indicate that the commerce of that port is steadily increasing. They show an ingfease in almost every total as compared with the month of August last year, and a large excess of for- cign arrivals and clearances during the month, being 102 of the former against 52 last year, and 68 of the latter against 62 also in the month of August, 1372, and being an increase of both ar- Fivals and clearances over the previous month of July—a flattering exhibit tn view of the fact that August is considered the dullest month of the year. The importations of coffee and sugar from foreign ports, as shown by the custom- house books, and of domestic articles from southern ports were very large. The customs receipts for last August amounted to $660,161.56, Or $117,619.32 less than daring the month of name. is. This large difference in favor of August, Is72, is, however, more than counter- balanced, as far as the general trade of the port is concerned, by the increase in value of foreign exports during August, 1813, over August, 1872, And the fact that there were more than twice as many entries and clearances of foreign vessels during August, 1573, as in August, 1872. The total value of foreign exports for August, 1873, Was $1,319,164, while that for August, 1572, was $1,224,012, showing an increase for the past month ote es nad 152. e Chief dustice Cockburn, of England, whose Judicial idiosynerasies Gen. Caleb Cushing took occasion to show up in his yolume on the Geneva arbitration, seems to be a petulant old fellow. According to a published report he recently suffered a severe snubbing at the hands of one Dr. Kenealy, a counsel in the Tichborne case. Dr. Kenealy in the course of an argument re- marked that the tutor of young Koger Tich- borne was more of a valet than a tutor, upon which the Chief Justice said: “I don’t think that is a proper observation.” ‘But I think it is,” retorted Kenealy. “I say it is not,” re- plied the Chief Justice. “Bat I say it is, and there 1s nothing to prevent my saying 50,” again retorted Kenealy. The Chief Justice replied: ‘Except the rules which regulate the conduct of gentlemen;” when Kenealy drew himself up and said, fiercely: “My lord, I know these rules as well as you, and will not have them dictated to me by you. I beg you will not repeat them.” ——___<ee-—______ ‘The conservative Virginia journals announce the fact that the republican state committee is levying contributions upon the federal office- holders in the state to carry on the present campaign. The Virginia Sentinel learns that “ Mosby’s men” will not respond favorably to this request, and is wait to see if their official heads will be cut off. The President announced Guring the last Presidential campaign that no governmentemployt would be removed for re- fusing to contribute to a political fand, and it is not at all likely that he will cause the re- moval of federal office-holders in Virginia or any other state simply because they decline to add with their means } one ne party o or the other. There could be no doubt that a solidarity of trades was a vital mecessity for artisans and laborers, without which their rights and liberties could never be preserved. Mr. R. H. Furguson, president of the American Cheap Transportation Society, addrtased the meeting, saying that consumers should own their own lines of transport, and bring supplies from the west at cost. ——____-<ee- The United States district attorney for New York city dissents from the opinion of the late coroner's jury in the case of Michael C. Brod- erick, who killed one of his sons and assaulted and stabbed another with deadly intent. The Jury, it will be remembered, found that the father acted in self-defense, a verdict which was generally condemned by the press in view of the circumstances of the case. The grand Jury his been directed to investigate the case, and meantime Broderick remains in prigon.
