° . 7 a UN & CO., ; Government Securities. WASHINGTON CITY: THURSDAY August 25, 1973. Newsraren ADVERTISING._Under thishead the Louisville (Ky.) Cowrier-Journal asks why anybody advertises in newspapers, and gives the following sound and simple answer as to ‘why business people advertise and the principle Of advertising —‘Obviously this, that the ad- Vertiser wants his ‘wants’ known; that he 18 Largest Circulation in the District ern, Bye dull. ‘wants’ to sell goods; that he ‘wants’ to hire a *help;’ that he wants either assistance or cus- tom, which, tn his own private walk in life, he cannot readily come up with. Why, then, does beadvertise? Because he cannot come up with his‘want.’ Very well; were should he advertise in order to give himself the best show? Certainly im that advertising shect which is read by the great~ eat namber of propl gf te sae The case of apparent resuscitation of a young man named Mathias, at Westminster, Md., when burial was about to take place, Proves to have been fallacious. It was reported that when the body had been pat in the coffin, after having been kept in ice for two days, it showed the appearance of life, and proper ap- pliances having been made the young man was restored to consciousness, and was doing well. It appears, however, from the correspondence Of the Baltimore American that the facts were as follows: M« hias had been suffering for some time with di-ease of the kidneys and dropsy, and on Sunday last at about half-past 1 o'clock he died of @ disease known as “Uraemia,” af- ter having been in a comatose condition for over two rae Shortly after death be was packed in ice, and so remained until Tuesday, when he was placed in a coffin for burial. Of course, the ice had preserved the body in a very fresh and natural condition, and when the family and friends gathered about the coffin for one last look at the remains, this fresh appearance caused some one to remark that he did not believe life to be entirely extinct- Mr. Mathias, the father of the boy, on hearing this remark, refused to have his son’s body buried until it could be examined by a physi- cian. Two were sent for, and after a carefal examination, one of them decided that lire had been extinct for two or three days. The other held that there were indications of life; thata blister prodaced inflammation, &c. The father of the young man therefore postponed the funeral, but cigns of decomposition have since set in. and the physicians now agree that life is entirely extinct. The case has considerable interest here in Washington, because a similar one occurred bere some time ago, that of a young lady who died down river, and whose body on being brought to this city showed a freshness of color and suppleness of limb that had all the appear- anceof lingering hfe. The physicians, how- ever, after careful examination, decided that these appearances were wholly deceptive, and that life had been extinct for days. This decep- tive mask of hfe it would appear is not an un- common thing, even up to the point when de- composition is abou to commence. — <oo- The Pennsylvania democrats in convention yesterday renounced Greeley liberalism and all its idols. They did not attempt, however, to frame an original platform, but adopted that of the Ohio convention entire, with the exception of the revenue tariff plank, which would bea losing card with the Pennsylvania protection- ists. There was a lively scene in the convention over the election of a permanent president. Mr. Bpear, one of the democratic Congressmen from the state, was named for that position, bat turned down on account of his having accepted the increase of back pay. He made a piteous appeal, but the virtuous delegates were inexora- Die, and he was forced to withdraw. Mr. Getz, another of the democratic members of the House, came to his defence, and was hissed into siience. It was asharp reproof that these gen- tlemen received from their constituents. Mr. Randall, chairman of the democratic state com- mittee, was distinguished in Congress for his Persistent advocacy of the grab, and he, too, comer in for a share of the conde: tion. ——-.ee-— ‘THE ADMINISTRATION AND THE Massacuv- SETTS CaMPaiGN.—A Hartford paper reports that in a conversation between Secretary Robe- son and s gentleman of that city, the Massa- chusetts political canvass was discussed, and “the relation thereto of the federal administra- tion” mentioned. The Secretary said: “The national administration is not in the business of either making or unmaking the gov- ernor of Massachusetts, or of any other state. If it should interfere, directly or indirectly, for Or against any individual, the would have just cause of complaint. There are thir- ty-six other states, but one would think from liberty to exercise his own it in perfect freedom in the discharge of his duties as a citi- zen and voter. And these I know to be the sen- ———_-<e--—_____ The action of the state conventions which assembled yest-rday may be briefly summed up ag ,Cllows:—The republicans of Wisconsin nominat.’t C. 0. Washburn for governor, R. H. Baker, lieute.“*™t governor; E. W. Young, sec- retary of state; a..1 0- O- Jobnaon, state treas- urer. Laclow, of Philadelphia, was nominated for judge of the Supreme court, and F. M. Hutchinson, of Alle- gheny, for state treasurer, and resolutions were Sdopted indorsing the platform of the Ohio Gemocracy. -foe--—__ At the meeting of the Maryland teachers’ as- Bociation, in Hagerstown, yesterday, Professor Remiey advocated the compulsory attendance Of children at school, and submitted resolutions appealing to the legislature to enact a law similar to that in Prussia, toenforce the attend- ance of children; but they were voted down, a majority seeming to agree with Mr. A. Lacy, of Howard, who would employ encouragement rather than compulsion. He would give prizes for good attendance, and give clothing to those who needed it. Compulsion is antagonistic to the genius of American Institutions. Let us Cducate the people up to the grand ideaof edu- cation. Improve the school system and it would be better than compulsion. ssee- The New York Tribune, not unju unjustly, plumes itself upon having obtained the news of the fight with the Yellowstone Indians 48 hours in advance of the Government. It was a creditable feat in the way of journalistic ex- terprise, and was effected by engaging the ser- vices of two hunters to traverse the rough and @angerons wilderness, pushing forward 150 miles through every difficulty and peril to the nearest telegraph station. We like the tone of the Tri- Dune in saying that it “finds this method of con- ducting & newspaper far more agreeable and Profitable than quarreling with our neighbers.”” A call fora national convention of the colored people of the United States, to be held in this city onthe 8th of December next, has been is- sued by the president of the Pennsylvania equal Fights league.
