EVE) NING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District ==— WASHINGTON CITY: WEPNESDAY «August 6, 1873, | = The Star By Mall. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or any portion of it,cam have Taz Stax mailed to thetr address for such time as they desire, at the rate of Sfty cents per month. Orders, sccom- panied by the money, should besent to the busi- ‘ess Office of the paper. ——__-+e2-______ Massachusetts is just now trying to figure out whether to be exultant, dubious, or dolorous over the vital stat stics presented by her 30th Teg'stration repor’, for the year 1871. The pop- Blation of the state in that year was 1,498,356. Of these sd during the year, or 19.20 in every 1,000. = not a very bad showing as compared, for instance, with Great Britain, where the last registration showed @ death rate of 226 per 10,900. The mumber of living births in Massachusetts were 39,791 in 1871 against 38, 36,193 im 1868, and 36,051 in 1850. A striking feature in the birth figures for 1871 is the great increase in still-born and illegiti- mate children,-—the former being 1,390, against 1,019 im 1870, and the illegitimate being 432, in- Stead of 255 in 1570—a gain of more than 50 per cent. in a single year. More than a third part of the illegitimate (161) were in Boston, and nearly half the still births (568) were in Suffolk county. If the female population of Massachusetts preponderates over the male, they don’t start that way at birth, as the excess of male over female births in 1571 was 81. The excess of male over female deaths, under three years old, was 757, showing that there, as elsewhere, ¢ children are subject to more casualties in the battle of life than female children. Of the 39,791 children born only 15,79 were of unmixed American parentage, While 19,120 were of unmixed foreign parentage, and 4,414 were of American and foreign inter- mixed parentage. The proportion of births of foreign parentage increases every year. Of the illegitimate births, however, more than batf are of foreign parentage. As heretofore in Massachusetts, consumption beads the list in the causes of death, 5,070 being set down to that scourge of New England. Pneumonia comes next, with 1,358 deaths, then cbolera infantum with 1,718, typhus with 1,116, scarlatina with S67, paralysis with 71M, and dropsy with 610. The number dying of ‘old age” was 1,554, of Bright's disease 199, of small pox 25, of diphtheria 274, of croup 473, of whooping-cough 243, of cancer 551. About 6,000 died under one year old (5,996), 1,755 be- tween one and two, and 9,506 (or more than one-third of the whole) under the age of five years. The Springfield RepwPlican in going over the Gata comes to the conclusion that the natural increase of population in Massachusetts is less than before the war, while the increase by im- migration is much greater. +--+ —____ The “conservatives” of Virginia meet in con- vention at Richmond to-day, to nominate can- didates for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General. The nomination for Governor seems to lie between Col. E. RB. Withers aud Gen. James L. Kemper. The re- pablicans feel justified by their success in car- rying the state for Grant to expect to elect their nominee for Governor, Col. Hughes, by a hand- 'y will elect their ticket by at ity they had in 13 ‘was about 20,000. The argue that though the state gave Grant the electoral vote by a majori- ty of 1,814, that on the Congressional ticket Vir- ginia went democratic in the same year by over | 12,000 majority. = —— +200 ——___ The Baltimor? ette thinks “I die happy” were I rave words for a great commander, but that similar expressions savor of impudence in acommon murderer. It adds: «Without limiting the inexhaustible gracious- ness of the Divine forgiveness, we must say that clergymen who parade their converts on the fold for pronunciamentos of salvation, allow their zeal to outstrip their prudence, and permit the offices of religion to be employed to decorate * If ever we should be guarded and reticent about spiritual character and condition, it becomes us to be so in respect to ns whose lives are forfeited to the law of their country by brutal murder. Pubhe executions, if they ss any value for deterring the bad, lose «ivantage when the bad are assured of an eary —f from crime to heaven.” ———— ‘The New York Times thinks the famous Squire in the plag, who hoped to recover a wrecked fortune by an invention for making deal boards just, was practical man compared men who are trying to compose a new party out of the rubbish of last year’s coalition. The new scheme 1s treated very ir- reverently on all sides, as it should be. Any- body wno will deliberately set about creating a new party in this dog-day weather, and when we bave just emerged from the pother of a presidential election, deserves to be treated ir- Teverently, or worse. — 222+ —___ Acase bas recently been concluded in In- diana in such amanner as to indicate that when a railroad company sells a ticket it is done with the understanding that the passenger will be furnished with a seat. A passenger in Indiana lately refused to give the conductor his ticket until he was supplied witha seat.
