EVENING STAR. Reading Matter on Every Page. ——SE—E ooo Largest Circulation in the Distriet ———_ WASHINGTON CITY: BATUER: August 2 1678. The Star By Mail. Persons leaving tae city for the summer, or Bny portion of it,can have Taz Stax mailed te Orders, sccom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busl- meas office of the paper. ‘The old couplet— « No rogue e’er felt the halter draw ‘With good opinion of the law,” ‘was not exemplified as it usually is on such oc- casions at the double execution in Baltimore yesterday. Too many murderers go to their Geath with a lie upon their lips, and at the same ‘time profess the fallest con fiience of passing to glory direct from the gallows. Yesterday, how- ever, both of the unfortunate men acknow! the justice of their fate, and exhibited a spirit Of penitence and resignation in keeping with the awful circumstances of their situation. After the drop fell, an old gentleman who was pres- ent remarked, referring to Hollohan, ‘Society As responsible for taat man’s death.” “How So?" inquired = by-stander. “Because it im- Pritoned him on a false charge of robbery in 1868, I believe every word of his dying speech, and that he was never guilty of the offence for ‘which he was sent to the penitentiary.” The Baltimore Americon confesses to a feeling of sympathy for Hollohan, and sayshis nature was soured by imprisonment in the penitentiary for crime of which hesolemmly asserted he was in- Bocent. It adds: ‘«* We shall have more to say heveafter of Hol- Joban’s hfe in the penitentiary. Prisoners who knew him well have told us that the injustice of bis punishment was always preying upon his . He had a proud, rebellious spirit, and as a matter of course, was frequently punished. Every Jagh that he received quickened his resentment and hardened his heart. He imagined himeelf subjected to such wrong and injustice that he to doubt the justice of |. In this hard La. was trained to be a murderer. If what he has said about the ny directs Public attention to the modes of discipline which obtain in such institutions, perhaps even in his unhappy death he will have done some good.” —+e-- Dr. Harris, health officer of New York, has published a letter on infant mortality in that city and its inducing causes. During the week ending the 26th ult. there were 869 deaths, of which 492 cecurred among children under two years of age, and 57 among children under five years of age. The greatest number of deaths on @ny one day occurred 15th of July, the total number being 157, of which 122 were of children under five years of age. The death rate for the ‘week ending the 26th ult., was equal to an annual rate in every one thousand inhabitants Of 44.72; the rate for the week before being “7.68. Nearly one-third of these deaths, Dr. Harris says, were caused by diarrhetic diseases; and of those who died from these causes during the week mentioned, 27 only were adults, whose Bverage age, however, exceeded sixty years. A map accempahies Dr. Harris’ letter designating where each fatal case of disrrhietic disease Occurred. ‘Bhis shows that the great majority of deaths occurred in filthy portions of the city Occupied by the poorer ctasses. He says that if parents wouki only keep their children and their houses clean many lives might be saved, and if Mm addition the little ones eould be taken into parks daily those who now ‘perish needless- dy by thousands would not die. ——__-«ee-- The New York Times discusses the compara- tive advantages of “‘change of air,” which in the opinion of pnysicians does some good even if the air is no better tn the new locality. Suf- ferers from bronchitis or pulmonary disease are likely to be helped by midland air; and the febd- rie dweller in low lands will profit by the atmosphere of the mountain. Hence we should naturally look in the hot weather to see the migrators from sea- board cities flying to inland resorts, and travelers from inland places flock- ing to the coast. Bat, strangely enough, this is true im so limited a degree as to show very plainly that the wish to seck “change of air” really influences very few people indeed, in arranging their summer journeyings, and that the majority mast be actuated by other than merely hygienic motives. New Yorkers go to Long Branch or Newport; Bostonians to Nahant ©r Gloucester; Philadelphians to Cape May, ‘and s on, thinking little of change of air. ‘The result is that a large proportion of pleas- wre and health seekers return from their sam- mer trips rather worse in health than when they set out. What is needed is real ‘change of air.” ————_ree -__ Circumstances alter cases. Certain New York Papers that had so much censure to shower upon our Board of Public Works for the *-arbitrary” removal of the filthy old market e#heds in this city, have nothing but praise to bestow upon the New York Board of Health for deqjing im the same effective way Wish the like nuisance in that city. - . +2ee- ‘We read that Joaquin Miller, when Fg with the Modo¢s, was called and that this means “The Moon Gazer” ¥. That was as near as the Modocs ould come to calling him “Not-worth-a-damn.” Almost any bod y can tell what this means. —-.22-—____ The Springficlt (niom says that the reason Gen.
