Roach, Secretary. pire oe eo The Monament Contribations. Mr. J. Carro, Brent, the respected secretary of the Washi: mn Monument Society, white not denying any of the material statements in an article which appeared in Tae Star of the 2th ult., relative to the manner of collecting contributions in the Patent Office, desires to say that some fifteen or twenty years since the society obtained the permission of the Commis- sioner of Patents to place centribution boxes in the model room of the Patent Office for the reception of such contributions as might be made by visitors. At the same time the society appointed a person connected with the office pamed to collect and turm over, at certain ‘times, all contributions, and this duty has been faithfully discharged by the same party ever since, although he is no longer an employe of the Patent Office. Mr. Brent says the seciety held and still hoits the view that these partic- ular boxes are virtually im the custody ef the tent Office the same as public property of much greater value on exhibition in the model room, amd that the tents. The society is convinced that, although abstracted fro1 money has several times been = the boxes, the Patent Office has used due dili- in their care, and that therefore the soci- ety has no fault to find im the premises. Mr. Brent argues that glass bores are preferable to those in which the contributions cannet be seen, and that the strongest and most intricate box would be no insurmountable obstacle to @ny person or persons bent on rifling it. We are inclined to differ: from Me. Brent on this latter point, for obvious reasons. With the present boxes the larceny of their contents is a comparatively easy matter, and could be ac- complished in about five minutes, as we stated, by simply unscrewing the boxes from the foundation on which they rest. “What man has done man can do.” These boxes have been robbed in & number of instances, and the same thing is Hable to occur at intervais as long as they are so vulnerable to the assaults of pil- ferers. Now, as the boxes are quite safe in the daytime, and these thefts have always taken daily they be re- | moved and locked up in some safe place in the building. By this means we think their safety would be almost if not quite assured. It seems strange that any American, either by birth or adoption, could be guilt mean act as stealing the contrih building a monument for the Father of his Country. —————— A Dovere Barrettep Mgetixe 1s THE ‘Twenty-rinst District.—A meeting of the | republicansof the 2ist district was heid last | night at Brown's hall,on 4th, near D street southeast, and those present seemed to vie with ‘one arother in making the meeting as noisy as | J ible. The woolen branches ef the trade were relatively by’ most po gy ta sane a have ne a degree of 5 ness which appears justified alike by the comparative absence oi vy accumulations and the firm tone of the market for the staple. Standard sheetings, which have become the recognized pivot of the market, were unchanged In price, (as we have repeat- edly maintainetl they would be ander existing circumstances, in spite of bear” rumors to the e contrary,) and coxsequently price changes were few @ Lge gree Dealings were frequent in nearly all staple descriptions, but on the whole cotton flannels displayed ‘the greatest share of activity—the sales of the week treading closely on the lieels of production. Wool flan nels of all descriptions were distributed with a degree of freedom which reflects credit upon the judgment of the trade, wlio justly believe that present prices indicate the lowest rates which are likely to be obtainable this season. An analysis of the goods entered for consump- tion during the week (as well as for the past six months) shows that while manufactures of wool, cotton and flax do not vary much in amount from the importations of last year, silk fabrics exhibit a material decrease, and there is at length a prospect of reducing these goods to & point where their profitable distribution may be looked for.—N.
