Traus-Atiantic Ballooning. ‘There is a singular fascination about the idea © traveling through the air with bird-like free- dom, and despite the numerous frightful acci- Gents, and general ill-success of efforts at wrial wavigation, new projects in this direction are continually being made. The latest 1s the undertaking of Mr. Wise, the ¥eteran wronant, auded by the publishers of the New York Graphic, to balld a ballvon of the capacity to carry two or more persons across the Atiantic. The tueory of Mr. Wise ts that at 4 certain height above the earth there exists 2 constant air current, or tide moving from the est to the northeast. Prof. Henry, who B appealed to for an opinion, gives a certain dmount of weight to the theory of the ait current from west to east, but doubts the Sustaming power of a balloon to travel that ist: and advises that the experiment be first made over-land for the same distance, ‘The main difficulty will, no doubt, be in keep- ing the balloon up long enough to make a trip ©f three or four thousand miles. To keep in the asserted easterly current it will be requisite to elevate or lower the balloon very often, and no means of doing this has been discovered, other iban by throwing out ballast to rise, and per- mitting gas to escape to fall, and there is there- Tore a constant waste of the sustaining power. ‘To be added to this direct waste, isthe steady Joss of gas by percolation from the bag. As this easterly current is supposed to exist only ata considerable height, it will readily be seen that any appreciable loss of gas wou'd soon put it out Of the power of the wronaut to rise to it, and By West, Niraj sinpistedas . A balloon can- nottack, but must drift hopelessly with the current. Another discouraging consideration is the Probability that hail storms or flurries of snow ‘Will be encountered in the upper region here mentioned, serving to load the balloon own with snow or hail, and thus cause its speedy descent. If the air current named travels dn a nortbeastly direction, as maintained, the }alloon must not only run these risks from snow and hail in the upper region, bat also in the Jower stratum of air; and would also, as has Deen pointed out, be likely to land, if it reached and, in some inhospitable region like Spitzber- gen. The possibilities of danger from snow are Jilustrated by the perilous experience of Mr. Frank King, who made a balloon excursion from Morristown, Vermont, on the Fourth of July. When about two and a half mfles up he eucountered a snow sterm, which covered the Dailoon nearly an inch thick, and sent it down | Fapidly. It landed in a dense forest, away from human habitation, and the «ronaut was finally rescued by a searching party, after being forty- eight hours without food. The wronauts in the proposed Atlantic trip have in their favor the facts that Prof. Wise, an a balloon trip some years ago, traveled nearly »0 miles in a northeasterly direction from St. Louis to Jefferson county, N. ¥.; and that, in 1836, a balloon voyage was made from Vaux- hall Gardens, Londen, to Weilburg, in the Duchy of Nassau. With exceptionally favoring circumstances, the trip across the ocean may yerhaps be made, but most voyagers, we Coudt not, would prefer the risks of # steamer Passage—even by the Inman or North Star line. ‘Morning western LOCAL RECORD. ‘The thermometer in the bueiness room of THe Stak office registered to-day ee follows:—8 a, m., 10 a, m., 8; 12 m., 83; 2 - 85. iS yew BOOKS.
