Baltimore ts naturally exultantover the ac- complishment of the great engineering feat by which four important railroads have been brought to a common terminus at her wharves by an extensive system of tunneling. The Bal- timore American to-day gives @ large sapple- mentary sheet to the illustration of this import- ant work. Thisenterprise is in two divisions, though they are sufficiently auited to make one great whole. They are the Baltimore and Po- tomac tunnel, and the Union railway tunnel. ‘The Baltimore and Petomac tannel (enabling the Northern Central and Pennsylvania rail- road to make sonthern connections through Baltimore) is one of the most extensive enter- prises of the kind ever undertaken. With the exception of the Hoosac tunnel, it is the longest onthis-ide of the Atlantic. The Hoosac tunnel is about sour and three-quarter miles long, and has been in progress for more than a quarter of acentury. The Baltimore and Potomac tun nel is about one and one-half miles long, and although of the most solid and durable con- struction, has been builtin two years, and the tunnel will be ready for the passage of trains by the ffrst of July, exactly two years and one month from the time when ground was first broken. The Union tunnel, though not so long, and therefore not socostly as the Baltimore and Potomac tunnel, is a work of great magnitude, and as it is the commecting link binding together | the whole system of through connection, is of high importance. The Union railroad, via this | tunnel, connects together the Baltimore and Potomac, Western Maryland, Northern Cen. tral, and Philadelphia, Wilmington and Balti- more railroads, and brings them all to tide- water at Canton, Baltimore. The Marylawi Central railroad, is also projected to connect with the Union railroad. The Union railroad is mostly doubled-tracked; the grade in no place eweede eighty feet to the mile, and is very easy over the greater portion of the route. The length of the road is three and four-tifth miles from the junction near Charles street to the junction with the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore road; and from the junction near Charles street to tidewater six miles. The cost of the road and tunne! has been $2.00, As the Union railroad isa toll-road it will not have any rolling stock, except one engine tor s! ing purposes. The charter of the railroad pro- vides against any discrimination in rates or toll, and the charges are limited to five cents Per ton per mile, and ten cents per passenger per mil Baltine e naturally expects to reap censider- able advantage from the Union tunnel, by which the large amount of business of four or five railroads will Be brought directly to her wharves without any interruption to street busines or injury to city property, but Wash. ington is more immediately interested in the completion of the Baltimore and Potomac tun- nel, by which the break in the counection throngh Baltimore, so annoying to travelers or freighters by the Northern Central railroad, will be avoided. <<-- Ina recently published call by the chairman of the republican state committee of Texas for @ convention to be held on the 19th of August next to place im the field candidates for the ferent state offices, the last legislature (democratic) is sharply arraigned as being the mest extravagant and corrupt of any of its | predecessors. The call charges the democrats with baving adéed half a million to the state | debt; w . having destroyed the credit of the | state; with giving away to some thirty railroad companics about 80,000,000 acres of and; with squandering $50,000 in useless investigations; | and with having struck # blow at popular edi:- | mm by the repeal of the schoo! law from which the state will not recover for years. Gov. Davis and many other prominent republi- cans have also issued an address in which they say that she last legislature devoted most of its time to special legislation; that it increased local taxation and angmented the public debt; | and that by an unjust and unconstitutional landiord and tenant law which was vetoed by! the executive, it sought to place honest poverty | op s par with crime. The Dacly State Journal, of Austin, says that after sucking the state ‘treasury dry the legislature passed a general sppropriation till and adjourned. A large number of warrants were issued to the state creditors who bave been compelled te dispose of them for little or nothin§ as they are depre- ciating from day to-day. The Jonrnal an- nounces that Gov. Davis is about to proceed to New York to endeavor to negotiate the state | bonds, and advises holders of warrants to retain | them until the resuit of the governor's negotia- | ons are known.
