NOYES ss-+--Eaiter, Beading Matter on Every Page Largest Cirealation in the District WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY.............+-- Jame 17, 1873, The Star By Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or any portion of it,can have Taz Star mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of Gfty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- ness office of the paper. state that we ia doce one recently in New ork city, where the Xa ouny : tad her'tace painted by about 25 years of an artist to cover places backened where mor- tification had set fn; her hair curled and decor- ated by a profé: ssional hairdresser; her weddii dress, en bet ——— ngs ed aroul her person; her ite white kid gloves, and holding a bridal So juet; flow- her coffin, beneath it and on the door for anchors, hearts, broken columns, ‘nee &e., over and around all these were burning myriads ae jets gasly tluminating the parlors, which 208 been ckcnea for the oce: by closing the windows. who never knew the deceased or any member of the family, but who came out of mere idle, pene curiosity, and tohelp to fll = of iow, Can it sing the funeral cort-ge. is all ‘this right—in fact, is tt decent be proper to make an exhibition of the dead as } we would of the latest styloet boxnete in a mil- | ra statue in liner’s windo" allery, or some rare, wil + ‘ost asen- redly not, — sooner the practice ig discon- tinued the be! As this door “says, the expense attending these funerals is simply enormous, and in very many cases far beyond the means of the family whom relentless fashion calls upon to make the unseemly display. Many there are who run into debt on these occasions, and their regrets | and for the departed are curiously mingled into regrets at the costliness of his exit. In the mat- ter of carriages alone, there is an unjustifiable amount of mosey spent, which even the very poorest of the people feel called upon to indulge in. The Catholic clergy, have thoughtfully, essased to remedy this evil, by limiting the number of carriages to attend funerals of those dying in their faith. The Jewish rites of burial | are, in many respects, worthy of consideration by other sects. With them the rich mi fune- ral is, in all essential particulars, the same as | the poor man’s. No ostentation is permitted, and no spectacular display. — A Great Picture. William H. Powell, the artist has been work- ing some more on his picture of the battle of | Lake Erie, at the Capitol, and has filled in about an acre of unfinished canvass since the adjournment of Congress. It was a great pic- ture then, but is now very much more so. Thirty or forty additional cannon have been brought to bear upon the devoted skuf that carries the gallant Hull to his new flag-ship. These guns are pouring hot shot upon the hero in the most concentrated manner. upon the water in the vicinity of the boat; and the bottom of that frail vessel isso cluttered up| with them that the men can’t row with any satisfaction at all. The boatswain has been floored by some of the balls, and he exhibits a good deal of discomposure at the weight of sixty-four pounder on the small of his back. ‘Two or three of the rowers have “caught crabs” im consequence of the water being so full of cannon balls; the commodore’s boot-iegs are jammed with spent balls, and a very large one rests directly on the top of his uncovered head. His little son tugs at his coat-tail. and pleads with him to sit down out of harm’s way; but this remarkable man will not sit down. will not budge, and with his head laid back upon his shoulders and his breast bared to the iron tempest, he gazes calmly into the blue em- pyrean. The artist, it should be added, has thrown out the chest of the hero considerably more than it was last winter, so that a straight Mine from his chin to hid waistband would cut im into three pieces. It isa great picture. ——_ ‘The planting of shade-trees in the streets is advocated by Dr. Stephen Smith, of the New York Health Department, on account of their disinfecting power. They absorb the mephitic odors which are given off in the greatest quan- tity during hot summer nights. It is a well- known fact that houses in malarial districts are protected when surrounded with trees. To this may be aaded their value as equalizers of temperature and the relief afforded by their Presence from the dust and heat ef acity. In the wide open streets of Washington the shade afforded by lines of trees is peculiarly grateful. iene Bills are before the Legislature ‘appropriating money frum the school fund fer various pur- poses, the erection of buildings, relief bills, &c., &e. Without reference to the merits of these propositions, it must be remembered by the Legislature that the school fund is not suf- ficient to bear these expenditures, and that the inevitable result will be (if they are voted) to make another deficit in the fund for the pay- ment of the teachers’ salaries. It is about time that we should learn “to cut the coat accord- ing to the cloth” im the matter of school fand Sppropriations. eigenen Despite the reported cases of cholera in Cin. cipnati the Commercial re-asserts its disbelief in the real existence of that disease in the United States this summer. This is the season for cholera-morbns, the Commercial remarks, and with cabbage and beer, cucumbers and halfde- cayce vegetables, supplemented by a bad scare, cases of cholera may be procured at any time. Thatthe Asiatic cholera should saddenly de- velop and spread in the Mississippi Val ley, of all the other regions on the globe, is quite in- credible to the Western mind. ——+atitree The statements in reference to the late Cap- tam Hall, of the Polaris, and his, widow printed ©n our first page to. strietly accurate.
