In the long ran, throagh double-sheets and otherwise, | We try todo justice alike to readers and adver- | tisers. The New York Tribune bas a thgughtful ar- ticle upon the condition of fallen women, tre: ing upon the newly-organized Rosine Associ- & ation for the ald of needy children, the object 6 ot which is the reformation of unfortunate ign s women, as well as the protection of young girls in dangar of falling. Both classes are received, Provided with a home for a year, instracted in ail kinds of housework, and placed in families = ings, 1s’ orm, ‘Corn a scarce; low southern, FE = “ty we or restored to their homes. The Tribune says many are disposed to doubt the permanent good | pl Rye ceak eect of mechanical general systems, and even thoughtful reformers are of opinion that deal. ing with individual cases is the only true meth- od. It says; ' fender ‘shoulders, “Let a pure, good woman take one of these Wretched sisters to her side, and surround her with home intlaence and Christ's love, and her reform is sure. But here are thirty thousand to be cured: and where are the good phy- | Sicians?” ‘That these poor wrecks are reclaimable where | the proper effort is made is demonstrated by | who were taken in charge by a band of | ‘Though the project of providing an asylum building for the poor outcasts fell through, from various causes, yet homes were found for | them in families where they have been able to | Fecover their self-respect and earn an honest | living by house-work, sewing, teaching music, | &c. Out of twenty-four thus furnished with Feputable employment, but six back-slid to | their former courses; and this probably shows | about the relative proportion of those of the | fallen who are naturally vicious, and those who have been betrayed into a life repugnant to | them, and from which they would gladly escape. ———_-+e2- __—__ One of the most pressing needs of our growing City is the reconstruction and extension of our fire alarm system. Most of the alarm boxes now in use are the eld imperfect crank boxes, (the results of the first experiments in fire tele- graphy,) and are continually misleading the firemen; the wires, which have been in use for many years, are nearly worn out and need con- Stant repairs; and the system, with all its de- feets,.does not sufficiently protect many sec- tions, including the northern portion of the city, Which is rapidly filling up with some of our best Tesidences. Georgetown too only has five alarm boxes when there ought to be at least double that number. Mr. Miles, superintendent of the fre alarm telegraph, sets forth these and other important facts bearing on the question in his annual report. which was submitted to the Board of Fire Commissioners Friday night to be transmitted to the Governor and through him to the legislature. The expense of anew and extended system with the latest improvements ‘will be considerable. but it must be borne in mind that a failure to do this necessary work aay be more expensive. One fire improperly signalled, or not signalled at all, may at any hour result in a loss of property equivalent to Ziany times the cost of the propesed « extension. a The project of the National Sanitary Barean at Washington, which originated with Dr. G. C. Cox, president of the beard of health, of this city, is meeting with favor among the scientific and thinking men of the country. Dr. C. R. Agnew, president of the medical society of the state of New York, thus alludes to this impert- ant measure in his late inaugural address : | | “ It is a most cheering indication of | to know that a bill has introduced into the | Senste of the United States to establish a Bureau of sanitary science. We would recom- mend that this society take becoming action to express its approval of so desirable a measure, | and by such an expression of approval, iby 10 | other means, give ‘willing aid to the ject which the act has in view.” Theenture bill, asoffered by Senator Patter- fon, in the Senate last session, is presented in the able address of Professor Agnew. Lack | Of time prevented action on this bill at the late | Session of Congress. Members generally ad- | Juitted the great importance of the proposed bureau; im fact, the only objection that could | Possibly arise would be the expense of its main- tenance. This, however, would be more than | counter-baianced by the benefits arising from 3 | Properly conducted bureau of this kind. ——_ +-eee- ‘The percentage of life lost in ocean travel is | Of course greater than im travel by rail, but we | imagine it is not nearly as large as most. people | Buppose. The statisticsof the several steamship | companies now in existence show that of the 3,320,000 persons carried on their vessels be- tween New York and Europe, only 979 have dost their lives by collision, shipwreck or foun- dering at sea,—or almost exactly one in 3,400; ‘and this includes the 516 souls recently lost by | Ooi the wreck of the Affentic, and the 177 who went | Gown with the ill-fated City of Boston some time ago. The ag,regate number lost seems large; | Dut, taking into account the large number of | People carried and al! the perils of the sea, the | Percentage of loss is comparatively small, and Hot so great really as to deter many people from | crossing the ocean who might be otherwise so « sposed. s20e- ‘There are a large number of people who would 1} e to know why the Botanical Garden cannot | ie kept open on Sundays as well as week days. | Li i» one of the most attractive places in the District, especially at this season of the year, but being closed on Sundays is not available to @ v« ry large class of our population, particularly the vor people who are compelled to work hard sll ti week, and have no other time but Sun- <iay In which to recreate.
