FISH CULTURE. THE DECREASE OF FOOD FISHES. THE CRUSE AND REMEDY. SALMON IN THE POTOMAC. A Talk with Prot. Baird the Govern- ment Fish Commissioner —Some- ing About the t Work He is Now Engaged in, Ete.. Etc. The subject of the decrease of food fishes on the sea-coast and in the lakes of the United States has received some attention by Congress, and two small appropriations have been made to prosecute the necessary investigation into the causes thereof, and to restock the rivers, if practicable. The work has made good progress, and several important experiments have been carried out, which prove that the propagat of food fishes of various species can be prose: cuted successfully, thus yielling a great ampunt of wholesome food, besides the pecuniary value of the trade; and furn'shing a la and boys with proiital jer the jo'nt resoluti February 9th, 1871 of Massachuse: by Mr. Dawes, cer F. Baird then spoke of the : has attended shad culture in the end Hudson rivers, as the most satisfactory evi dence of artificial culture. A few years ago mm the Connecticut river the shad became so scarce that they were worth from 59 cents to $1 each in the New York markets. The artitic process of ———% | was commenced about five years ago, when half a million of young fish were put in the river, and the number inercased every year until 1872, when NINETY-ONE MILLIONS OF YOUNG SHAD were putin. In 1871, the frst year that it was expected au increased supply of fish could be taken from the eggs put in three years before, there was an immense number of shad caught, and in 1872 they were a perfect drug, being <o plentiful as not to bring more than $3 a hun- dred in some instances. People were not pre- pared for the increase, and, therefore, the catch was not utilized as much as it might have been. This year there will probably be enough taken to supply one quarter of the United States. SALMON, now the most costly fish and most sought after, economically is less important than theshad and herring, as these are more widely distributed, multiply faster, and of course furnish a greater amount of food. Last year the appropriation made by Congress did not become available un- til after the Ricscoek ieee oe do much towards hatching shad. was ‘ime, hewever, ‘or the salmon, and Prof. Baird, after aconsultation with prominent fish cult: - iste, to supply of eggs a8 from tp California was rather late last to seeure a fall supply of eps"; and besides some troub'e was eapotenced in finding the spawning locai- ity, how to pack and transport the eggs, & About 18 000 eggs only were secured, and they were sent to the establishment of Dr. Slack, in New Jersey, where seven or eight thonsani were successfully hatched, and turned out to be fine vigorons young fish. They were put im the Snsquehanna at Harrisburg. Had the effort t btain the eggs in California last year been sac. cessful, it was the intention of f. Baird to put a quarter of a million of young «almon in the Potomac. All the arrangements to secur at least three millions of eggs next fail have been made, and next spring we will have that tine fish introduced here.
