Rair- ROAD DESTROYED BY Fire.—About half past eight o'clock last night fire was discovered in the machine shop of the Orange and Alexandria railroad company, corner of Gibbon and Patrick streets, in Alexandria. The alarm was at once given, and in a short time all the engine compantes were on the spot, but owing to the bg difficulty experienced in obtaining water, the flames made rapid headway, and soon the entire structuye was a mass of flames. Finally water was secured, and the firemen went man- fully to work. The flames spread southward, and destroyed ‘the paint shop, (built of wood,} of the company and a large amount of lumber which was piled in the vicinity. All the cars of the company which were on the tracks and in the depot were saved. It was proposed at one time that the Washington fire department should be called upon for assistance, but the isolated position of the shops, and the certainty that they would be destroyed before aid conki reach them, prevented the call. The estimated loss is $20,000, A number of mechanics em- ployed in the shops are thrown out of work. It 18 Su] that the company will at once rebuily the shops. It was reported that the fire originated from a watchman going into the oi!- room to draw benzine, which caught from his lamp and exploded.
