Toles there is sanctification In inanguration coid, as there isin a frozen river when the ice is broken for delicate women to be immersed for religion's sake, who are said always to es- cape illness, there must certainly be wach sut- fering in the city to-day. The cokt endured during the day scarcely acclimated any one for ail to be endured at the ball. Hereafter the proverb, “as cold as Christmas,” must be changed to “as cold as the #th of March.” “The ball-room and supper were all that had been foreshadowed, perfect. in beanty and abund- ance; it was only the Intense coli that marred the effect. First came the committees, then President Grant, escorted by Goy. Cooke and Mr. A. R. Shepherd. Vice President Wilson ‘ollowed, who was escorted by Mr. Hallett Kil- vourn. ‘Then came Col. James G. Berret with Mrs. Grant, Lieut Fred D. Grant and Miss Nellie, Secretary and Mrs. Fish, Secretary and Mrs. Boutwell, Secretary Belknap, Secretary Robeson, Secretary and Mrs. Delano, Post- master General Creswell, Attorney General and Mrs, Williams and Speaker Blaine and lady. The arrival-of the «distinguished visitors was of course the event of the evening. As soon as the party bad reached the platforin, the guests pro- ceeded to pay their respects, BlacqueJBey, the Turkish minister, leading off in that direction. The President's platform happened, in con- ~ quence of the ne A inthe weather and the hgh northerly winds, to beat the cold end of dic room, and the handsome toilettes of the ladies were partially concealed by ermine capes. The President and Mrs. Grant were the central figures. Mrs. Fish was sitting a little back with che Secretary of State behind her chair. Next ‘as Mrs. and Miss Boutwell, the Secretary of the Treasury with them, next Mrs. Creswell, shen Mrs. Williams, and next Mrs. Delano: Miss Grant stood by’ the side of her mother, Miss Edith Fish was with her mother. Miss eIniyre accompanied Mra, Creswell. Gov. ¢, with his wife and daughter, were next vw the Cabinet ministers. Jay Cooke was also present. Mrs. John Delano waswith her moth- er-in-law. Back of the Cabinet stood some of the foreign ministers. They were not in court -irese, but some of them were brilliant with dec- orations. Madame Preston accompanied the Haytien minister, and Madame Flores the min- ister from Ecuador. By this time the room was auite full, and its intluence was felt by a grad- nal warmth pervarling the atmosphere, Some time betore, the gentlemen had been able to remove their hats, and the ladies were divesting themselves of some of their many wiaps, fur IN MUMMY STYLE, here were many layers to be taken off before reeognition. THE SUPPER Was eminently a success, It was ready before "be ball was, and its choice supplies never gave ont. It was beantifully arranged and was com- posed of the most tempting viands. But, alas, the cold! Even thin sandwiches, which alwags strongly tempt the writer of this, could not vem that frigid atmosphere. There were an abundance of attendants; there were boun- tiful supplies of champagne and claret punch, which did not need the usual admixture of ice todilute and cool them. The air was enough to do the last, and really no one wished the first. In fact every one WANTED SOMETHING HOT, and tea, coflee, und chocolate were'in vogue, and were swallowed in haste betore the ball be- gan. Itseemed as if every one rushed first to the supper room, and swallowed hastily the hot sinks, coffee, We., todrive out the penetrating cold. But the supper table bh: cheering look, and no private supper was over more lavishly sup- plied or more handsomely ornamented, ner hee. ter supplied with choice articles of fool. The room Was decorated with lanrel rope and the national colors, and the table was covered with white muslin. The entrances were numerous, in all measuring upwards of 15 feet. The President had a private supper room for himself, family, cab: » Xe., also, what there was of the diplomatic ‘corps.
