THE SMALL POX REPORT—THE POL THE SMALL POX—A PHYSIOL“ TION. A meeting of the board of health was held last night, and Dr. Verdi. the health officer, submitted the report of sm: x cases for the month of January as follows: New cases report- ed, %5; white 81, colored 191, males 192, females 113, never vaccinated 159, vaccinated previous to the past five years M, do. within do. 22, re- moved to hospital 70. One hundred deaths oc- curred, classified as follows: Males 65, females 35, white 26, colored 74, never vaccinated 72, within five years 5, previous to five years 23, under five years 21, from five to ten 16, from ten to twenty i6, twenty to thirty 18, thirty to f¢ 14, forty‘and upwards 15. Of the deaths vacci- nated within five years 5 per cent., vaccinated previous to the past five years 2% per cent., never vaccinated 72 per cent. During December there were 261 new cases and 101 deaths—an in- crease for January of fourteen new cases, aud a decrease of four deaths. MIXED BLOOD. Mr. Langston suggested that the classification as to color be a litt closer—say, white, black, and mixed blood or mulatto. There was a very interesting question attracting attention now as to whether those of mixed blood are not less liable to take disease than were the pure bloods, and if they are not longer lived. Dr. Verdi said that probably not one-tenth of the colored population were black (unmixed.) Mr. Marbury.—Not so large a proportion. There are some regular Africans here, how- ever. Dr. Cox.—Yes, some Congos. You are out as to the proportion. Mr. wgston said he a made the sug- , asthe information might be valuable after. far as he was concerned, he be- lieved the mixed-blood people were the best— like THOSE THEY USED TO MAKE IN VIRGINIA. Dr. Verdi also submitted the report of Dr. Stewart, showing for the week ending yesterday he had performed 107 vaceinations_72 white, 35 colored, 78 adults, 29 children, primary 4, re- yaccination 103. A HINT TO THE POLICE. Dr. Verdi called attention to the fact that the police had several times sent cases of small pox fo the board of health rooms, endangering the health of the community, when it was donvt- less known to them that there was no place tor them at the board rooms. He offered @ resolu- tion, which was adopted, that the president con- fer with the commissioners of police, with a view to provide a place for tem rest of such people as are found in the streets, or who have no residence, affected with the small pox, umtil they can be removed by the ambulance, and to prevent policemen from directing the same to the office of the board of health, this not being a place for the reception of small pox cases. VACCINATION OF SCHOOL CHILDREN. Dr. Verdi called attention to the fact that a resolution in relation to the vaccination of pu- ils of the public schools had not been answered by the board of directors, and offered a resolu- tion that the committee on epidemics confer with the Governor with a view to secure a thorough vaccination of all the pupils of publie schools. This gave rise to a debate, in which the powers of the boards health and public schools were disc |, and a substitute offered by Mr. Langston was adopted, that all school officers, trustees and teachers thereof, are hereby ordered and forbidden to receive inte and allow to attend any school, public or private, within the District of Columbia, any pupil not vaccinated according to the rales aud regulations and orders of the board of health. djourned. a The Fire Department.
