EVENING STAR. | Largest Cirenlation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. yar ASHIN GTON CITY: -Febraary 7, 1873. It is quite probable that diplomacy will settle the difficulties between Great Britain and Rus- sia. but meantime the continental nations seem to be preparing for a possible collision between these two powers. The German government is Feported to be strengthening its defences all along the North Sea. At the same time the an- nouncement is made that the Russian fleet, now in the Baltic, will soon sail for the Mediter. rancan. The tone of the London papers con- tinues to be menacing, and the answers from the St. Petersburg journals indicates anything but a conciliatory disposition on that side. The Ofcial Gazette of St. Petersburg, of February Sch. the eable tells us, in an artiele onthe move- ment of Kussia in Central Asia, coutrasts the Great Britain views the growth of the United States of North America With the jealousy with which she watches the rowth of Russia. The Gazette says the British rnalists are simply beside themselves with *, and concludes its article by advising the Britsh government to take no more notice of the progress of Kussia than shedoes of that of the United States. + It is quite possible, we repeat, that diplomacy ms tle the dispute short of blows; but it Inust be conceded that the present indications are quite ax ominous of war as any that preceded the war of the Crimea between these two pow- ers. or the later continental wars betweed Ger- many and Austria, and France and Germany As regards the exciting cause for conflict be- tween Kussia and Great Britain, it may be said that the advance of Russia through Turkistan has been steady ever since the Crimean ‘war; and the position of the British government has been oue of watchful neutrality Eng- land bas not objected to the advance of Rusia aiong the river Amo, nor to the conquests of Bokhara and Samarecand, although applied to for help by the rulers of those countries. The British government claims to desire no con- quests in Central Asia. The boundary of her empire in India is the Seleiman range of moun- tains on the west, with control of the Khyber ‘aud Bolan passes. As long us Russia confines herself to that line she will meet with no resist- ance from England, but an advance beyond it | will be considered a menace to the British em- Can it be that there is foundation for the Feyports circulated, that what Is called the Inter- fonal Society is carrying out a regularly Planned incendiary programme in our large cities? The New York Journal of Com- | Sores says of the matter ; «We have beenreinctant to believe the stories Of the incendiary purposes of the Internationals circulated some time ago, But, if these men are Elsewhere will be found a communication in regard to the dangers to pedestrians in passing ugh the Smithsonian grounds. Garroters and ruftians of all descriptions seem to have full sway there. It is safe neither for man nor woman to pass through the grounds either by day or night. and it is quite time the place was proper- ly policed, as it is not only the principal park r for health resort, but Is also @ great natural thoronghfare between North and South Washington. We don't know exactly where the responsibility rests for this state of things. Be- tween the poliee authorities and those of the goverument, it seems to be'® sort of No-man’s Lami, or Alsatia, such as existed in London in the lawless period of that city’s history. That such a sanctuary for rnffianism should exist an- molested for years within a stone’s throw of Pennsylvania avenue, is a disgrace to both the police authorities and the government aathori- ties. . ‘The question, “Who deserves hissing?” is intelligently answered by Appleton’s Jouraal by Soying : “ At the theater let them indignantly hiss the masicinns who come stumbling noisily Into their places in the midst of th the close of each act. Latnatenpuarconan, iy bustie into their seats, to the dis- turbance of the whole awembly; hiss the men and women who rush from their before is over: hiss, relentlessly hi In both Houses of the British Parliament yesteri:y the Queen's speech was sharply eriti- cised by the opposition members, who contended t .at the Geneva arbitration was one-sided, and tue result humiliating to England. There were unanimous expressions of opinion that Russian encroachments in the East must be resisted. And now the Cincinnati Gazette comes ont in Quarto form, following the example of the Chi- ago Tribune and the St. Louis Republican. We shall expect next to see the Louisville Courier Journal changing from its familiar blanket size to the more convenient cight-page form. eis 2 pinta ae es Mr. Job Stevenson might as well give up the undertaking to “catch the Speaker,” as a bad job. To exchange debility for vigor, sickness for health, apathy for energy, gloom for cheerfulness, is amuch more desirable operation than to transmnte lead into the root _of allevil. And this is what Hos- tetter’s Stomach Bitters accomplish, and have been accomplishing daily, ever since their introduction. Dyspepsia, biliousness, nervous affections, constipa- tion, intermittent fevers, rheumatism, sick headache and general debility are no longer the bug-bears that they were a fifth of a century ago. The Bitters, taken as @ protective medicine, prevent them, and taken as a remedy cures them, and the people know it. Hence their overshadowing reputation and enor- mous sale. The fame of the great vegetable specific is ever om the march, and ata pace that no com- petitor can live. It is to-day the foremost medicine of its clase in the civilized world. Every now and then attempts are made to rival it,and sometimes a nestrum concocted inthe idle hope of sharing ite popularity, has a brief spurt of apparent success. But it is ail. illusion. One by one they sink like stones in the sea, while the great tonic, whose celeb- rity has been the cause of these blind veutares, con- tinnes to ride on the topmost wave of public favor, uuapproached and unapproachable. —f3-co&W. : WANTS. i y ANTED—T + & first class FURNISRED mri THE Cavest PorotAR Phen \¥ sererarrpicueetotsenett™ ISTOR TEN’ iC WORKS, ?
