EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. ‘The inqniry has been frequently raised why t\ ening schools are not matntained in Washing- fon tor the benefit of these whe cannot attend Curing the day. The experiment was tried here fome years and proved a failure through the Jimited and irregular attendance and from other fauses. The same experience has been had elewhere. At Newark the experiment has proved a failure to a considerable degree, the reason given being that the working class, for whom the night-schoo!s are principally intend- fd, are too weary at night to apply themselves tostody. The attendance is small, and the re- turns hardly equal the outlay. In Jersey City the heard of education has just decked to close them at an earlier date than usual, owing tothe poor aitendance. the carrying of concealed weapons is causing © cussion in other communities as well as ours. Among the bills awaiting action in the New Nork assembly is one regulating the carrying of concealed weapons. It provides that it shall not be lawful for any person within the state to have concealed on his person any pistol, knife, sivngshot, or other weapon of offence, except as Yrovided by the second section, which gives the Jnayor.or presitentof the board of police of any City, or any justice of the peace in all towns, power to permit the “carrying of such weapons 2+ shall be designated in such permit.” A vio- iation of the law is made a felony, upon the cou- ‘vietion of which the party violating it shall be imprisoned not less than five nor more than ten years. It is not believed shat any such law can pass, as one nearly similar to it was killed last year in the lower house, for reasons urged by Recorder Hackett from the bench while the Measure was pending. He held that a thousand Jaws against pistols would not prevent the dan- erous classes from carrying them, and that law- abiding citizens would be more than ever at the mercy of the lawless. ——$§$_ro-____.. And now it turns out that Representative Koosevelt’s virtuous raid upon the District gov- ernment is because one of his strikers was not ‘ied for with a fatsineeure office under the See his letter to Vice A correspondent writes us to inquire what val or legal difference there is between mem- » Ders of the two houses of Congress holding stock in the eredit mobilier and stock in national Janks, or street railroads in the District of Colombia, im regard to which they are at any t me liable to be called upon to legislate 2? Very Sittle, if any, we should say. Nor is it any Worse, in eur opinion, for them to hold that x readed stock than it is to accept a pass over the Pennsylvania avenue street railway i he plain intent in the giving and the yvotutal result of the holding of which is to pre- vent the passage of any law requiring the com- pony te put and keep the street in decent con- ition. is merely a question of amount, not of erals or law; and one of the most hamiliating ning sights which a stranger ean see in Washington is to observe the furtive way in one ot the pro: presentatives of some and people pulls out bis greasy well- aste-board and sort of halt shows it tor to save his five cents fare ! see Fae irae et treet mance eer FOR RENT AND SALE.
