EVENING STAR. CROSBY 5. NOYES......Editer. Largest Circalation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. med ASHINGTON CITY: el Reminiscences Theatrical. ‘The burning of the “+ National” Theater yes- terday for the third time calls up, among old theater- goers, many reminiscences of that classic Thespian ground. The first managers ef the National Theater of this city were Messrs. Maywood, Pratt and Rowbotham, and their ning tight was a great saccess—Mr. May- wood performing the part of ‘Sir Pertinax MacSycophant,” in the “ Man of the Work,” as it has never been here since. The compary may be judged by the merit of its membera, Many ot us recollect Cline, with his Roman nose and stylish mode of the zentect comedy. Rodgers «id the heavy business, and a most villainous- Jooking villain he was. His wife, also in the same company, was one of the best tragic actresses of the time, “star” or otherwise. Lame little Dwight was the comedian, aud in such characters as‘ Squeers,” im Nickleby,” he had mo equal. Mrs. Knight, after Mrs. Momop, was the most piquant of chambermaids. Thin, pert, and sparkling, her bright style was thatof Agnes Koberton when Agnes wasn’t Mre. Bourc Peter Kichings was also in the company. ‘Thomas Ward, a very gentlemanly and ge ous Englishman, was stage manager, but as an actor his role was limited te two parts, ‘-Far- mer Ashland,” in “Speed the Ploagh,” amt “Newman Noggs,” in “Nicholas Nickelby.” As the latter his performance waa as perfeet as Owens’ “Unit,” or Jefferson's “Rip.” Charles Burke—“Our Charley”—as he was lovingly styled here, appeared while B: ton was manager, and brought out “Patnam which made a great hit with Charley as the Yankee militia captain of the Squash Neck Blues. Towards the close of the same season Barton brought out “Beauty and the Beast, and while be wason the stage as the Bonst, about nine o'clock, during the perfurma: the theater took fire, and in an hour was a rain. The first “National” was one of the finest ‘theaters in the country. We have had nothing Of its comforts or its elegant appoiutments since, | and only occasionally a stock company that will compare with the first. In those days the the- atrical firmament was illuminated by Edwin | Forrest, in his prime, when he could indeed “make Rome howl.” Burton, afterwards so stout, was then too thin to play “ but in the “Mummy,” « ones” —John Jones of the War oft he was irresistible. Joe Cowell as “Crac! "and Fherle as one of the “Two Dromios” will be re- | member 1 with gusto. iy after the first destruction of the Na- | tional by fire, Burke began his successfa! career | im the little Adelphi Theater, now Young's coach shop, on Pennsylvania avenue, ucar 4\¢ street, in the qumpeny of Browne & Nic hols, nee at New York, | with Fanny La Roche as “Lize,” he made a | great hit. At that time he originated the pre- | sent Kip Vam Winkle of Jetterson, who also | truly asserted of Burke that he bad the finest Jefferson were half-brothers, both being sclons of the famous Jefferson stock of actors. Burke, who has been dead some years, had morte origi- _ nality than Jefferson, but not the cultivated | ers of his half-brother, who yet holds the | stage as perhaps the finest performer in his line now living. | | genius for comedy of that day. Burke andJoe | se | i oe ‘The Intest sensation in South Carolina és a Tumor at Columbia, the state capital, that the entire Charleston delegation in the general as- “mbly are to be presented for indictment at the approaching term of the court of general j sessions, which opens there next week, on | charges of bribery and corruption, in con! tion with the electionof Patterson tothe United States Senate. A special telegram to th: Charleston News from Columbia says that it has been currently reported ami believed there fur some months that the whole delegation, with ty one exeeption, signed a formal pleage te support and vote for Patterson im considera- tien of securing his influence with the state board of canvassers in their favor, and against the Mackey delegation, which claimed to have been elected. It is understood that they are not to be charged with receiving any money for their votes, but that they are tobe prosecated ‘or the alleged bargain under a state law. ‘The punishment for their conviction upon charge would include a fine, imprisonment and expulsion from the general assembly. | COUNCIE. of A?
