The Death of Bulwer, A cable telegram from London briefy an- nounces the death, on Saturday afternoon, of the Right Hon. Edward Bulwer Lytton, the well-known English novelist and poet. Lord Lytton was the youngest of three sons, and was born at Haydon Hall, county of Norfolk, in 05, and was therefore in the 68th year of his ge. The strong literary tastes of his mother, who was heiress of the Lyttons of Knebsworth, toation of his mind, his father having died when the future Lord Lytton yet young. He was educated by private tutors, but afterward entered Trnity Hall, Cambridge, where he £ n 1826. His first play» “The Duchess de la Valiere,” falled, but “Bichelieu,” “Money” and “The Lady of Lyons” were, on the other hand, remarkably suecessful- In 182 “Eva, the H-Omened Marriage,” with other tales and poems from his pen, appeared, and at & later period the New Timon’ and “King Arthur,” two clever poems, were pub- ished anonymously. ‘The literary merits of no writer of modern fic- tiom were more fiercely attacked or more warm- jy defended. He by turns illustrated fashionable Lie, chivalry and history, and his latest novels ere his best, most trathful in spirit, and most thful in moral tong. He first entered Par- homent in Indi, and im June, 1858, he became a member of the Derby cabinet as the successor of Lon Sugnley in the office of secretary of state for the colonies. His political repatation, how- er, is not as lasting as his literary fame. As 1 orator he was polished in lis speeehes but ot in his speech. Lord Lytton’s married life, lke that of several of his illustrious compeers in literature, was rendered unhappy by the disturbing influence which is termed the incompatibility of husband und wife in every case where the parties are of high station. He was married in 1827, and there eat public interest in the event. At the time he was deseribed as “pale ant fasct- nating,” and the bride as surpassingly lovely. As time passed and the weak couple grew in strength, the popular interest in them, except author and authoress, departed, and was only y the story of their separation in 1436. settled on his wife an annuity of she soon found that her expenses ald not be met with her income, and as her husband advanced im worldly prosperity she began to utter complaints, to which he gave no attention.
