EVENING STAR. Largest Cirealation bi in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. veo’ ASHINGTON CITY: . Saunary 20, 1973. The Death of Bulwer, A cable telegram from London briefy an- nounces the death, on Saturday afternoon, of the Right Hon. Edward Bulwer Lytton, the well-known English novelist and poet. Lord Lytton was the youngest of three sons, and was born at Haydon Hall, county of Norfolk, in 05, and was therefore in the 68th year of his ge. The strong literary tastes of his mother, who was heiress of the Lyttons of Knebsworth, toation of his mind, his father having died when the future Lord Lytton yet young. He was educated by private tutors, but afterward entered Trnity Hall, Cambridge, where he £ n 1826. He gained the Chancellor's {the University for English versification, 4 por: on “Sculpture,” in 1825, and the next var published a cellection of youthfal effu- entitled “Weeds and Wild Flowers.” hed a poem called “ONeill, or a the same year his first novel, appear anonymously. In 1823 riham” was publ 4, was rapidly fol- y “The Disowne devereux,” **Paal For a time be as editor of the New Monthly Megazine, and contributed a series of papers, which have sinee been published tn a lected form, and entitled “The Stadent hile exercist itorial functions he was en- gaged with his ngland and the English,” which was published in 1833. He next wrote his Tomance, "The Last Days of Pompeli,” which or the Siege of Granada,” <Calaeron, ourtier,” “Night and Morning,” “Day and Night,” “The Last of the Barons,” “Zanoni,” Harold,” “The Caxtons,” “My Novel,” or arietios in English Li What Will He Do ith Itv”and “A Strange Story”. His first play» “The Duchess de la Valiere,” falled, but “Bichelieu,” “Money” and “The Lady of Lyons” were, on the other hand, remarkably suecessful- In 182 “Eva, the H-Omened Marriage,” with other tales and poems from his pen, appeared, and at & later period the New Timon’ and “King Arthur,” two clever poems, were pub- ished anonymously. ‘The literary merits of no writer of modern fic- tiom were more fiercely attacked or more warm- jy defended. He by turns illustrated fashionable Lie, chivalry and history, and his latest novels ere his best, most trathful in spirit, and most thful in moral tong. He first entered Par- homent in Indi, and im June, 1858, he became a member of the Derby cabinet as the successor of Lon Sugnley in the office of secretary of state for the colonies. His political repatation, how- er, is not as lasting as his literary fame. As 1 orator he was polished in lis speeehes but ot in his speech. Lord Lytton’s married life, lke that of several of his illustrious compeers in literature, was rendered unhappy by the disturbing influence which is termed the incompatibility of husband und wife in every case where the parties are of high station. He was married in 1827, and there eat public interest in the event. At the time he was deseribed as “pale ant fasct- nating,” and the bride as surpassingly lovely. As time passed and the weak couple grew in strength, the popular interest in them, except author and authoress, departed, and was only y the story of their separation in 1436. settled on his wife an annuity of she soon found that her expenses ald not be met with her income, and as her husband advanced im worldly prosperity she began to utter complaints, to which he gave no attention. Becoming angered at this indiffer- ence, she began to use her pen against him publicly, and issued several novels and i hlets, wherein he was depicted in any but ph ee ——— eps In justice to Mr. Harlan ft should be stated that, after the closing of the report upon which the paragraph in Saturday's Star was based, Dr. Durant testified that the ten thousand ‘ar “doucher” paid to Mr. H., to secure his return to the Senate, came from his own private pocket and not from the corruption fund of the eredié mobilier; and in justice to ourselves it ¢ be stated that we fell into the error sh the want of enterprise on the © Chromicte itself. Reading in its. ilk column the article upon which we commented, we turned at once to its report of the investigation, and finding there nothing later than had been printed in Tae Star the evening before, we naturally assumed that nething more had been sakt on that point, and we therefore felt justified in saying what we did without looking farther. So mach of an — dust what difference it makes in morals whether Dr. Durant paid the money in question as @ private individual, with his whole stake in corporation needing faverable legislation, or 2sfan officer of that corporation, we leave to professors of ethies to settle. As nothing has as yet come to the surface about the money having been retarned nor claim having been made therefor, we are bound to presume that Dr Durant is satisfied with his investment, and that. we suppose, is all that the parties to the contract care about. To the pablic eye, how- ever, the atmosphere surrounding the whole transaction is sull very foggy. ——-- +202. ——_ Mr. Nehemiah H. Miiter, who has dis- tinguished himself so notoriously as District prosecuting attorney at the police court, also undertakes to publish a grab-sheet upon Dis- trict advertising, ealled the Anseiger. He has the impudence to pablish in this sheet an at- ck vpon Tae STAg, misquoting, as editorial im this paper, am extract from the Galazy “Carl Benson” on the efficacy yeayer. This mon Miller undertakes, his own dirty purposes, to make t that this extract (showing the tenor of t's Gelery article upon the prayer- gauge.) was editorial opinion of Tae Srar, at- jerman government and the Ger- The large number of intelligent crman readers of Tae Star do not need to be informed by Mr. h H. One per- son objected to the name, on the ground that it savors too much of physic, and moved that it be called the Democratic Union. His sugges- tion was not, ft seems, accepted. The stmount of life power taken out of the strongest of us hy the chilling vapors which frequently load the air at this period of the year is very considerable, and to the weak aud languid they are extremely deleterious.
