EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. __ caeanr S. NOYES...... Editor, Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. W. ASHINGTON CITY: SATU RDAY January 14, 1973. The Prayer Gauge. Imthe Gelazy for February, “Carl Benson,” (Mtr. Charles A. Bristed,) brings some fresh ‘theught te bear upon the mooted” subject of the ¢fScacy of prayer. The main fanetions of pray- er, he holds, are spiritual and personal, and he continues: “A man prays for spiritnal help and guidance —amd under the term spiritual I would inclade more than the moral part of our nature. He will ray for wisdom and understanding. as Solomon vs ali the intelleetral strength involved in rmination of many ethi questions. will pray for support and heip and comfort under the pressure ef calamity and affiietion. Amd the benefit aud fruitfulnessof such prayers scem to be veritied by much individual experi- ence, though it may be impossible to prove them by mathematical demonstration or physt- cal experiment “As soon as & man goes ont of himself, and his praver becomes objective, he i venturing ubious ground, for several reagons— others, the obvieus one that he knows less about others’ reat wants than about his own. And when it comes to aiming ata purely phy- cal object, we must be on owr guard against weking fora violation of the laws of nature, or in other words, an alteration of the course of nature, or, in brief, a miracle. Petitions which assume that the ighty acts with about as Tuck coherence as Wendell Phillips telke, may be subjectively devout, but are objectively bins- phemons.”” Proceeding in this line, the writer argues that when we consider how often, in cases where our desires have not reached the earnestness and dignity of prayers, and have referred to possi- Die eventualitics, we have been utterly upact by the occurence of these possibilities and the gfatification of our wishes—when we cousider this, it should make us cautions as to physical and objective arms in prayer. He cites ae an illustration, the fact that so many of us were wishing year after year that something might happen to check the over- weening arrogance and all-pervading encroach- ment of the French! How we almost regretted that Grant and Sheridan had not been allowed to try it while their hand was in! Well, one day the French were suddenly and atterly smashed, and next day it turned out that the new power which had taken their place was rather more re: »Tather more given to brate force, and rather more perilous to progress and free government everywhere than our old bagbear had been. In view of such things, we ought to be thankful that our prayers do not oftener pro- duce what looks like direct “physical agency.” fe LR A We are still groping in the dark; and, greatly to our regret, the Chromicl fails to throw a sat- istactory light on the relations which exist or Which one time existed between Mr. Harlan on the one hand and the Dr.-Durant-Union-Pa- cifie-Kailroad-Credit-Mobilier interest on the other. For instance, we are unable to give to- the testimony of Mr. Durant before the investi- gating committee yesterday the same construc- tion whichis placed on it by our cotemporary. | Referring to this testimony, the Chvonécle in its | issue of this morning, says : “This sectles the question, if Dr. Darant's testimony ean be relied on: Ist. That the Doctor wanted Mr. Harlan elected on two grounds—personal friendship and his Towa in- Jerests; 2d. That he voluntarily contribnted to Aid in that result; 3d. That he used his oa pri. | Yate means, and not the funds of the company.” Let us sce. In answer to the question of | the chairman whether he gave Mr. Harlan | ten thousand dollars out of his own pri- vate Cunds, and never asked to have it refunded by the company, Mr.Durant answered promptly aud pointedly : "i present a claim to the Union railroad for expenses, and it was allowed: MORNING GAZETTE, Pe ai Tamlly meveopoiitan SUNDAY PA, icone, Pt La of ir a ‘as far north as the Hudson river, and our spe- Sinton Seat Se Fowams we ross | athreatened dood in the Potomac, the water rising rapidly at Harper's Férry. Still, we may be wr It may be on account of our remote- ness from the transaction, and it may be from our plain straightforward way of looking at things—our “commercial character,” we think the Civonicle called it. Any way, the thing has a dubious look as it stands, and a little better Tight upon it would be a good thing in the in- terest of the publie. Will the CAronicle Please strike anothe T match? —— eee It is to be hoped that the attempt to suppress the violation of the Sunday liquor law in this District is not one of those periodical move- ments which result in gecasional raids on bawdy houses, gambling houses, and illegal liquor houses; after which things goon in the old way. ‘The war must be unremitting to accomplish anything. Nothing leads to more breaches of the peace than Sunday tippling, as has been Proved im nearty every eity in the country. In Chicago, for instance, the recent closing of the saloons on Sunday has resalted just asa similar embargo on the sale of liquor did in New York, viz:, reduced the number of arrests pearly one- half. From August 11 te October 20, 137:, when the saloons € open, there were arrested On + 403 persons for drunkenness, 402 for being both drunk and disorderly, and for Beor- der @ total of 1.532. From October 2 to | December 20, the saloogs were shut on Sundays, Ee and the total number of arrests fell to 33. Of | these 255 were for drunkenness, 9G for drunk- enness and disorderly conduct, and 343 for aisn- ple disorder. This diminution was effected, though im some parts of the city the law was | met thoroughly enforced. During the period TIGt the sG!"* Sere Open there wore several mitdcrs and murderous assaults, while during the time that the saloons were shut only one murder has occurred. Such facts and figures speak for themselves. ——— ‘The testimony of Dr. Durant about his ten thousand deilar contribution to a Senator-edi- tor, rather tended to pull down the press from the serene clevation where they dealt thunder- belts upon the heads of the unlucky devils in oni whe Dad get pitched by rubbing oa Ames. Bui there is yet baim in Giiead. If through Harlan’s fall we sinned all, we may yet be saved through the atoning grace of te Aepubiican’s virtue. The high-morality whacks; that paper gives its sinful morning eo- temporary to the extent of a couple of columns, about the ten thousand dollar business, could only be prompted by an ineffable, hundred vir- gin-power sweetness and wholesomeness of life, « heart-whiteness, so to speak, a sheet-iron pet- tieoated, anti-sedaction clad impregnability, as it were, that gives hope that enough righteous newspapers can be seared up to save the jour- Baligtig citic: of the Fain. The Rockville Sentinel recommends the rei tablishment of the “old-fashioned whipping post” as a remedy for petty thieving; the lash to be confined to the backs of negroes in the old- fashioned way. “‘A negro,” says that journal, «does not consider it any disgrace to be impris- coved for stealing, but to reccive a public whip- Pong at the post is considered most damaging to b reputation.” We are afraid Rockville is not ve, to the thmes when it is gravely by 7 proposed i organ ef opinion to return to the whipping pest. Outside of Delaware we had supposed no volee world be raised in defence of that relic of Lerbarisw. But, after all, there is no good rea- » why the whipping of petty criminals shoald be considered » barbarity when it is held yet to = the correct thing for the children in our pub- © schools.
