EVENING STAR. CROSBY 5S. NOYES......Editor. Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: January 17, 1973. FRID. “A Poorly Concealed Swind The above ts what the New York Post styles the following clause. in the bill now before Con- gress, to amend the patent laws : “ And no extension granted prior to the pas- sage of this act shall be held fuvalid by reasou of the fact that the certificate of extension was not annexed before the expiration of such patent.” This apparently harmless provision is un- doubtedly intended to do a great injustice to the public, by assisting a monopoly to extort extraordinary prices for acertain kind of paper. ‘The French Mellier straw paper patent expired several years ago; it was temporarily revived by action of one of the officers inthe rtment, but so great was the oppo- @ patent, the right of which was ubtful, that the trick was exposed and e A. Now, after five years, r this clause of ld patent comes a bill, which im the t; as no other patent affected by it. the clause is at any rate The company having the Mellier 3 this means, with the aid of the informa! oficial action above mentioned, to revive their swindle. It ix a small affair, among the mass of subjects before Congress, to look after this clanse, but its passage would involve the payment of a large amount in the aggregate by newspaper and book readers for an unworthy purpose. ———__ -+e- -___. Jndging from the small number of delegates amt the limited attendance at the woman's suf- frage convention, the cause is not gaining ound. Mrs. Stanton is doubtless right in ‘ing that the hitch is with the women them- solves. Whenever the women of the country, as a body, demand the right of suffrage, they will get it. The tirade made by some of the speakers against the oppressor, man, as stand- ing in the way of female suffrage, does our in- offensive and well-meaning sex a good deal of injustice. Im poimt of tact, we of the male persuasion are very much inclined to let the women suit themselves in the matter. If they really conclude that it will be a comfort and protection for them to vote, why let them vote. As Dr. Titcomb sagely remarks, if a wo- man wants to sing bass, aml can sing bass, why, let her sing bass. “__+20e- + Somewhat disgusted are the colore colored men in Pennsylvania at the manner in which the offices are gobbled up by their white brethren. So we Judge from the tenor of an editorial in the col- ored organ in that state, Our National Progress, which remarks as follows: “We and the colored people of the state of | Pennsylvania feel chagrined at being so sought for during the troubles of the late canvass, and being now so forgetfully thrust aside. Sena- tors and representatives say It was an oversight— it was not thonght of in time. Ail we have to say is, that these oversights are too infernally common, and that the caucuses of each house knew of the necessity in this case in time suffi- cient to remedy the diffient The colored voters arc now in consultation over all such matters, and they have nearly come to the con- | clusion that to radically remedy these things, holding as they do the balance of pewer in county and state, they must strike out for them- selves. ————_—_—_ | Groping for light, as it were, in this credit | mobilier business, we must confess that progress is slow and, moreover, meandering. For in- stance, we find the Chronicle of this morning stating positively, in regard to the ten thousand dollar contribution ef Dr. Durant for the re- election of Senator Harlan, that “it was not until some time after the alleged expenditure for his benefit that Mr. Harlan heard of it,” and the Chronicle goes on to say: “Let it be remembered that there is no preteuse that Mr. Harlan had the handling or use of this money, or ever touched a dollar of it.” This is all very satis- factory, but what are we to think, in onr painfal ight, when Dr. Durant testifies, as he hat ‘‘he paid this money to Mr ” Well, this is a foggy world, to Harlan di make th ——_——-+2e-—___— If Henry Ward Beecher is in Washington, as stated, ard this paragraph should meet his eye we would suggest to him in a friendly way that those who take stock in him in this city would be giad to have him make some authoritative denial, or take some positive step,to set atrest the Brook- lyn scandal with whieh his name ts connected Jt is sometimes well to+live dowu” scandals, but occassionally it happens that silence gives ground for suspicion, and true manhood re- quires in such case that the charge be promptly and boldly’ confronted. The singular card of Mr. Theedore Tilton so far from clearing the matter up, leaves so many inferences damaging to Mr. Beecher that he (B.) caunot afford to re- main longer silent. <n ERE aaa ola “The word “embolism,” used to express the cause of Napoleon's death, is derived from the Greek “embolus” meaning anything acting or inserted in another like a wedge or the piston of a steam engine. In pathological science the term is applied to express the formation of a clot, either in the heart itself or In one of the large blood vessels, which operates as a plug or like a piston that will not work. This clot is said to have been the immediate cause of Napo- leon’s death; and doubtless there have been handreds of strong men in commen life who have died in the same way, and none of their friends knew they had “embolism.” ——____.se~. The New York Post says . the “ melancholy interest” attaching to the revelations of the credit mobilier committees in Congress is grow- ing daily. The Post holds that the developments made shows the stringent necessity “for the ab- Olition of every species of legislation for special OF private purposes, from protective tariffs to direct congressional gifts, in all of which there are more or less mutual considerations, guar- antying that congressmen and speculators shall not ‘ go back’ on each other.”" eaten) snd as ‘The defeat of the Oklahoma bill in the House yesterday was a serious disappointment to the friends of the Atlantic and Pacific railroad euterprise. It was said to be an opening wedge to a scheme donating to that company some fifty millions dollars’ worth of land, or thereabouts. The subsidy jig is up. It cannot be danced to the credit mobilier music. ——_—— 65 “Expiring snarl of a defunct liberal” is what the Zra styles General Farnsworth’s jeremiad against the Bureau of Education. ‘The Era thinks ‘‘no higher compliment the Commissioner of Education atd his | than the abuse of such men as Fa ‘The love be jette and the Baltimore Sun does not seem to be exactly of the Jonathan and David order. — ott TRIAL oF Mrs. Witantox—The Experts Again.—As Was anticipated, the wial of ‘harton at Annapolis seus destined to be attended with a second war of mo petts, such as rendered inemorable the ocea: of het former Deering. 3 Dr. C. Goneral debility, and the despondeney by which it is invariably accompanied, are often regarded as the symptoms of incurable physical decay. Of persons thus afflicted it is often said that their constitution are undermined; that they have nothing left to fal back upon; that they are hopeless cases. This, in a least cight instances out of ten, is @ false conclusion Aconstitution may be shaken without being under mined; and even if undermined may be propped and strengthened; and in many so-called hopeless case there are reserves of vitality and latent vigor in the system that only reqaire stimulating and developing to render them equal to the work of repair. The bes and surest stimulant and invigorant that cam be given asa remedy fordecay of the vital powers, whether natural or casual, is Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters If the faltering physique can be roused into healthy activity by any human means, this regenerating veg- etable cordial will accomplish that object. Its effect upon the appetite, the digestion, the nervous system the secretive organs aud the bowels is most salntary. It not only acts directly upon the solids and fluids of the body, but indirectly upon the constitution itself, Persons left by fover in such a deplorably helpless condition that it would seem as if they conld never recover, may be completely built up—it might almost be said, re-baalt—by this mighty, this well-nigh in- fallible vegetable restorative.
