_EVENING STAR. _ Largest Circulation in the District | Reading Matter on Every Page. vy ASHINGTON CITY: THURSDAY. -- January 16, 1972. The Falling Of in Religious Ferver. At the weekly meeting of the Methodist Preachers of New York on Monday the diseus- >on upon the nature of future punishments was contineed, and by several of the speakers the falling off of interest in religious matters was attributed to the lack of earnestness in preaching eternal damnation as the pewalty for non-re- pentance. The Kev. Dr. Merwin said that his parishioners felt but little interest in prayer meetings. Dr. Parker said he was sorry to report the state of the church on the east side of the city as altogether unsatisfactory. On Sun- day morning he preached on “Horror,” enteay- to show the people their peril. In the = his subject was ‘The Sinner’s Death- where he showed his hearers that without they must be eternally dammed. He ster difficulty in converting fifty sin- y than in epnverting five hundred ve yearsago. He would like to know ; they certainly preached with as much ervor, and better sermous. One venerable preacher said he was glal to note @ revival ot orthodoxy on the docirine eternal fire. “There was not enough dis- ussion of hell—the real old-fashioned heil. i the MethotTist preachers believe in the doctrine of hell as they used to believe it, why do we not hear more about it? Why do not the ministers preach until the people trembi We do not have in these days those relentings, those heart-breakings that we used to have. Our revivals now are comparatively pretty. They are done up in the highest realms of ari. We do not want any more of this fancy work. Those who want to please God must Hight the devil with the sword.” Another brother said that he was sure the edi- tors were writing enough of hell and damnation, amd he thanked God for that. Miss Catherine E. Beecher, in one of her oldest essays, proclaims eternaldamnation. He thought Miss Beecher more competent than any of the Beechers to give an opinion. Another speaker thought the frivolous “ sheet music” sung by the modern choirs had some- thing to do with the falling off in religious interest. The general expression of opinion, however, was to the effect that greater earnestness. and more faithful admonitions as to the dangers of the wrath to come, were needed to arouse the unconcerned. twenty. th Photographs printed with printers ink, onan ordinary printing press, are one of the latest results of human skill and ingenuity, although the principle upon which the process is based Was discovered in France some twenty years. It ntil recently, however, that the of priuting photographs om priut- ing presses, the same as wood or steel engray- was ascertained by an Englishman, who, eived a patent for his in- vention from the United States Patent Office. ‘The process ts already largely im use in Europe for book and magazine illustrations, and has re- ceived the endorsement of many scientific so- cities. The inventor claims for it the especial merits of accuracy and cheapness, and asserts that pietares true to life can be produced by it tor a few cents, whereas the same pictures from ordinary wood or steel engravings would cost om fifty te ene kondred times as mach. As t promises to be ene of mucit interest, we append a description of the process, The principle is that gelatine, which ordi- uarily bs water very readily, yet when treated with a bi-chromate and exposed to the action of light loses this px to a greater or less degree, according as the action of the light is greater or less. So that we can produce by light on a sheet of bi-chromatized gelatine, by means of a photographic megative, the same resalt th preduced in lithography by draw- ing on 2 stone with a greasy ink: that tto ay, where the light has acted, just as where greas ink has been used, water is repelled; where ligh iignt bas not acted water is absorbed and pelled, and where light has partly acted, as in the balf-tones of a negative, water is Partly ab- sorbed and grease partly repelled. Ordi nary gelatine is dissolved in warm water, and as ficient quantity of bi-chromate of potash is added to render it sensible to light, and of alum to make it very hardand durable. This is poured ou a level plate, Previously rubbed over with wax, and is us of heat. As soon as dry, or when geied for for nse, the sheet of gela; tine is stsipped frean the plate, and printed under a photogra, raphe negative. When the eae ture appears sut [esouety y Plainly, the sheet of gelatine is taken from under the negative, and made to adhere toa metal plate. The m:thod of adhesion used is that of atmospheric pressure. ‘The sheet of gelatine and the metal plate are put together under water; as much of the water as possible is got rid of from between the two surfaces, the gelatine absorbs the remain- der so that a vacuum is created, and eae ture is thus attached to the plate by the we ef the atmosphere. The supertuous chemicals are sonked out with water, land the plate, with the printing surface of gelatine attached, placed on an ordinary pl: ten printing press, and inked up with ordinary graphite ink. Asin Ethography, it ts neces eo every impres- sion mp the plate water. A mask of © is used to secure white margins for the Prints, amt the impreasion is then palled sat ready for issue. ES are some- times used in the Production of one picture, as it is found that where the light has acted deep- ly a stiff ink is required, but where it has acted not so deeply—that is, in the half-tones-——a thin- ner ink may be used. So that a stiff ink is first used tor the shadows, and a thinner tak afters wards for the half-tones. In this manner three or tour inks may be used in printing one im sion. The effect of India or other her color tint is obtuined by using, instead of ordinary water for damping ‘the plate, water with some color in . The paper acertain amount of wa- ae out of the plate, and with it a certain amount of coler. ‘wo or more inl _———— ‘The synopsis of the private improvements in the District of Columbia completed or to be completed within the tiseal year 1872, which we print in our local columns to-day, compiled from the detailed report of the assessors, shows that private cuterprise here is keeping pace with the public spirit of the Board of Public Works in improving and beautifying our city. It shot also that there ts $100,000,000 worth of taxable property in the District at a valuation at least 25 per cent. below market prices of real estate, so that the real wealth of our people is about $1,009 per head of all the inhabitants. For a community with bat little commerce and few manufactories, this exhibit is as remarkable as U & satisfactor —_——_-<e--______ A movement is on foot in Brooklyn, N. ¥., to establish cheap eating-houses, conducted on temperance principles, aud known as “ Holly- ‘Tree Coffee Houses.” Theyare for the expecial benetit of the working classes, and are intended to be self-supporting. The eapital stock is to be divided into shares of five dollars each, thas bringing one or more shares within the reach Of the poorest, and giving al! an interest in the stecets of the enterprise. The Rey. Dr. Cuyler, at a recent public meeting te take action on the subject, referred to the success of the Holly-Tree houses in Boston, London and Glasgow, and said he bad no doubt they soudadumeaniemny weil in Brooklyn and New York.
