EVENING STAR. Largest Ciren ation in the District Reading } Matter er on Every Page. wud ASHINGTON CITY: What . They Say About It. Most of the papers have something to say Shout the late developments in the credit mo- Dilier investigation. ‘The New York /ost thinks the most unfortu- it in this affair is that it serves to give e to Congress. Not that any Congress Ian alsolutely accepted of this credit mo- bilier stock, but that it was freely offered and negotiated, and that Congressmen appear to be the habit of in ug in stocks, the value of oh they may affect at any time by their votes, The Tribune says: + real sorrow, we must and MeComb's sworn wdilier stock has ogress, knowingly, -rally than many have The Herald plumes If on having unearthed the whole ti g, and demands “this sink of job- until those who have guiltily fa aud it are held up to the scorn of the world.” ‘The Times says: “Mr. Ames makes it perfect- Jy clear that he wished to interest Congressmen im his scheme for the sake of their intluen be- lieving they would look after their own businoss Detter than after that of other people.” The Times aids that the resolution pawed by the Howse directing the President to sue the credit Mobilier for the defanit of interest by the Pacific Tnion Company, “looks more virtuous and en- thuniastic than et ‘The N. the people expect little and generally get little from the action of investigating committees, and that the adoption of the resolution offered by Br. Kandall is likely to give more satisfaction. “Here then,” says the Commercial, “is a way by Which the matters in dispute, which recently figured = largely in political assaults, are to be taken into court, their merits decided, and a re- anit obtained in conformity with settled princi- ples of law. It is hard tosee what certain ewspapers will do, with the staple of their po- litical attacks thus withdrawn to a sphere so different from their own. But it is the business- Tike way of reaching a settlement, and it may Prevent waste of time in Congress.” The Baltimore American can see no good rea- gon why Congress should be turned into a court for the trial of an issne between H. C. McComb and Oakes Ames. The American says: These gratiomen have the choice of many courts. They are members of a corporation which has its ramifications in many states, and in any one of which a suit may be ironght” The Iitrgants being citizens of different states, and the corporation holding its charter United States government, the: action in any of the United @istrict courts, if they prefer to submit helt re- spective rights to the adjudication of the federal tribunals. They have a canse pendingin the Supreme court of Pennsylvania, and there they should have been permitted to tight out thelr quarrel. It is to be regretied that Congress took Suny notice of the matter. The indecent how! that was raised by certain newspapers over the alleged bribery of a dozen members of Congress vould soon have been forgotten, and the charges, if false, would have gone into oblivion With the other rebbish of the campaign. That Which was trae would have been perpetuated in the records of the court to whose arbitrament the whole matter had been submitted.” ——<«2-____ It seems to us that the proposition to convene the Legislature for the purpose of making an appropriation to defray the expenses of the In- @uguration ceremonies should be abandoned. It is desirable that these ceremonies should be on a handsome seale, and creditable to the city, but it dues not seem to be right that the people should be taxed without their consent for the purpose. In our opinion the Legislatare should not be called upon to make this appropriation. ‘The fatal facility with which, under the impulse of the moment, sums beyond the capacity of tax-payers here to well bear, can be voted away was demonstrated by the vote of one hundred thousand dollars to Chicago, at the time of the fire, when one-quarter that sum would have been, on the ratio of comparative wealth, greatly beyond the proportion Washington should have Contributed in comparison with what was given by other cities. We have no doubt that a sum Svfficicut to make the inauguration celebration entirely creditable to uscan be raised by sub- Scription, and very largely from the class who are directly interested iu having a large number ©f visitors drawn here—the hotel keepers and business men generally. At any rate, we are very clear that the money should not come from Distri the District Treasury. It isto be regretted that Mr. Corcoran’s mu- Rificent gift to the city—the Corcoran Art Gal- lery—is not yet open to the public. We under- ptand that the building, corner of Pennsylvania aftnn, and Ith street, has been in readiness for some time past, and that all the works of art, formerly at Mr. Corcoran’s residence, have been deposited in it. As Mr. Corcoran deeded the gallery to a board of trustees, he claims that he bas nothing further to do with it, and that the trustees have sole charge of the matter. It was intended to call a meeting of the trustees some weeks ago, to arrange for the opening and dedi- eation of the gallery, but for some reason it was not done. Appreciating the gift as highly as our cit’ cnsdo, they are anxious that the gallery should be thrown open to the public as sven as it can be done conveniently. ————— ‘The Virginia Sentinel, published in Atexan- dria, pronounces the chain-gang system a fraud and a nuisance. Prisoners continue to escape, Ad the Sentinel says : «Some time ago a man deliberately walked Away from the gang on the street, a! ate y yesterday another retired in only greater has Mr. Edlward Meade, one of the gang, it says, is one of the favored class. “ He stops and leans en his spade, and enjoys himseit railing at the pawers-by, more than three-fourths of the time he is snp} to be working for the publie good, which his acts have violated. The House com- ittee on civil service have the matter in chargo, and, it is reported, are in favor of such Teadjast quent.
