VENING STAR. DOUBLE eee. __tRosBy 8 NOV Largest Circulation in the aaa Reading Matter on Every Page. ae ASHIN GTON OITY: January 4, 1973. Long Island Civilization. Ap atrocious and mysterious deed committed im the village of Huntington, Long I@and, is now undergoing investigation. On the evening of the ith of November,.a young man, by the wame of Charles G. Kelsey, was seized by a party of men in disguise, was stripped naked, and tarred and feathered, after which a num- ber of the people of the village, men and wo- men, (!) were called! ont by the perpetrators of the deed to take a look at their shivering, bleed- ing victim. What was afterwards done with Kelsey is waiter of mystery; but as nothing has since been seen or heard of him, and as por- Hous of bis clothing, stained with tar and biood, were found on a beach six miles distant, it is supposed that he died om their hands, or was killed by them, and that they carried away the body and sunk at this point. .There is a theory that the tar stopped the pores So Jeompletely as to cange death, and that parties concerned in the deed then feund it necessary to conceal the corpse. Kelsey, who was @ young man of means, bat rather weak-headed, seems to have been in- tatuated with a pretty young girl, namod Jal Smith.who bad another suitor, named Roya! Sammis,a clerk with H. B. Clatlin & Co., the New York dry goods men. It would seem that criginally Kelsey was the favored suitor, but that the fascinating dry goods clerk had sap- planted him. Kelsey's offence appears to have been that he insisted in forcing his attentions op the young lady in a way displeasing to Sammis and others, and the tarring and feathering, and the subsequent exhibition of | the naked, half-frozen victim to the refined and high-toned Hungtingtonians, ladies (!) and gentlemen, was to teach him a lesson. Really, isit worth while for the good people of New York to send their missionaries to look after tolerably well-dispesed heathen at the other | end of the world, when they have these savages ot Heptington, Long Island, right at their doors’ | ——_—_—_—__-<02--____ | ‘The oficial report of Rear Admiral Sands, of | the United States Naval Observatory (first pub- lished in Tae Stam on the 29th of November | last) gave a circumstantial account of a me- teoric shower occurring on the night previous. Overseven hundred meteors were observed in | jese than seven hours, and Admiral Sands char- acterized the display as a very remarkable one, exceeding that ordinarily seea on the 14th and Eth of November. The same phenomenon, it | is reported, was witnessed at sea, neac the Ma- deira islands, on the same night, except that the display was of much greater magnitude, | thousaudsof falling stare being noticed before | midnig But the most brilliant exhibi- tons were witnessed on the same night further East, In Greece and Egypt. At Saez, the thower began at 7 o'clock in the evening &nd lasted unti o'clock next morning; up fo midnight the number of meteors was esti. mated at 30,000 timate was atte: exandria, Egypt, | ing was computed at 290 per minute. Says one account of the display at this point. ‘ Many ef these stars took the form of meteors, as bright as Jupiter when in Opposi- tion, leaving long trains of light behind them, and conveying the impression that they were | reduced to gaseous state by their excessive ve- locity, and the friction of the earth's atmos. | phere.” Admiral Sands (good authority) in his Teport, said that the radiant peint seem te indi- | este that the meteors were moving in the orbit of Biela’s comet, which eccen'ric celestial body, | according to the prognostications of timid phi- | losophere, was to collide with the earth and knock the latter into smjthereens. = a ‘Twenty-five vacancies will occur tn the Sen- ate en the fourth of March, twelve of which have already been filled. The states vet to elect are Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania Georz's, Alsbama, Florida, Louisiana, Ackan- sas, Lilinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kansas, and | Navada. Io Miseouri, Senator Blair is having | @ desperate time of it, as the anti- Blair men are determined, it 18 said, to force the senatorship away from St.Louis. A special dispatch from if | that city to the Cincimnati Gazette «ays that (Gratz Brown will be a candidate for thd Senate. {t is also said that Gov. Woodson will b2 a can. didate, but this is dowbtful. Col. Bogy, of St Louis, Joka 8. Phelps, whilom Congressman | from the old 6th district, andGen. Marmaduke, | ex-rebel, were on the ground on New Year's | day working like beavers tor the caucus nomin- | ten. on “The Augustan Age of Murder” is what the | N. ¥. Heraid calls it, aud proceeds to foot up | the murders im that city in the last three years: | Forty murders in is70; forty-fve murders in | 71; fifty-six murders in 1572. Five more mur- ders im ist! than in 1970; eleven more murders | tw 1802 than ip Iv 1—an increase of sixteen mar- ders intwoyears. The Herald seems toseriously | incline te the opinion that it may be necessary | “to tear a leaf out of California's history, imitat- ing in the civilized East the vigilance committee | ot the barbaric West.” It certainly would seem to be necessary, at the rate of progress of the murder mania, to form some sort of a Jugular | Protective Union tor the safety of the yet an- | murdered. } Opr Alexandria neighbors still continue to credit us with supplying them with the smali- pox. Why they keep on doing this we can't | imagine. If @ person takeu with the disease bas visited this city at apy time within six | months past the statement goes forth at once that “he contracted the disease in Washing- ton,” when the fact is that there have been | cases Of smali-pox im Alexandria every week tor twe months past. This is hardly fair treat- ment. ss0e- The & rooklyn Union bas a fishy story to the elect that Jay Gould is the real owner of the Tribune: that Jo. Howard, of the N. Y. Sta: came bear buying it for Tweed; and that the | circulation of the paper has fallen off so that “a total coliapee Of the Tribune's business is threat- ened.” Guess not, A paper of the standing of tue Tritwne don't lose its circulation and busi- | 3 ness in aday. The Trib. has certainly all the l= look of & live, able-bodied paper. Everybody commiserated P. 1. Barnam when he was recently burned out fo- the third time in New Vork; bat few willsympathize with him over the loss of his thousand dollar diamond | pimet which some light-dngered chap relieved bim while ricing im the street cars a few days since. However, it is possible that the pin was of a character corresponding with many of P+ Te curiosities—an imitation of the genuine article. ——_—___ -<ee-___ ___ General Crook’s vigorous campaign against the Apaches must not be taken as an indication of the departure of tthe government from its general policy towards the Indians; but simply 4% @ proof that incorrigibly hostile savages will be whipped into submission. Uucle Sam vir- tually says to bis red wards, “We will have peace, web we have to fight for it ‘The Baltimore agent for the Associated Press does vot seem to be a particularly active indi- vidual. The city might be burned up, or haif the people murdered in their beds, and the rest of the world would not get the news except through the Baltimore papers. ‘The Savannah News wrongly credits to Tax Stak an article in relation to President Grant and the © from Louisiana So taras Tas Stax has anything to say in re- gard to the squabbling cliques in Louisiana te “a A plague 0’ both your houses!” ‘The Georgetown Courier tells, pleasantly, how it comes to appear on a half sheet this week. ‘The Courier is a good paper, whether on » half oF whole sheet. o-—___ ‘We suspect that the idea of substituting Mr. Evarts for Secretary Fish hae not been seriously entertained, thie side of New York. | the rates took a dow: ds: | The public i is ieipestiahy SCE.
