Secretary Bovtwett’s Svccessor.—In the event of Secretary Boutwell’s election to the Senate from Massachusetts in place of Vice President-elect Wilson, it is believed bya great many that the President will confer the ap- pointment of Secretary of the Treasury on Assistant Secretary Richardson, whose ability is generally conceded. THE VACANCY in the supervisorship of in- ternal revenue in New York city, caused by the resignation of Mr. Dutcher to accept the pen- sion agency there, will be filled, it is thought, under the civil service rules. Mr. Lucia . Hawley, the revenue agent, is next in the line of promotion, and as he is qualitied for the po- sition, it seems to be the general impression that he will get the appointment. INSPECTION OF STEAM VESSELS. — Joseph Nimmo, supervising inspector general of steam vessels, bas submitted his annual report to the Secretary ef the Treasury. He recommends that the power of assistant inspectors be extended, so that they may be qnalitied to per- form all official acts now devolving upon local inspectors; also that power be given by law to the Secretary of the Treasury to convene inves- tigating boards, composed of such officers of the steamboat service as may appear proper to ‘ppoint to that duty, which boards shall have plenary power to inquire into all cireumstanc: attending casualties, and to suspend or revoke the licenses of steamboat inspectors derelict in their cuty.
