EVENING STA ~~ crosBYr NOVES......B Baitor. Largest Cirenlation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page. ~~ WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY. ovember 2. 1872. @cone ¢ tired of ozone. If anything 's wrong in or those who bresthe it, ozone is always hief. Ozone is unre- Mabie. it is as uncertain a quantity as the liberal vote. Ozone is never to be found jast where you want it, or in the right quantities at the right time. Too 2 ozone, the savans eay, makes the horse-di sease; too little the cholera. W ox is particularly and pestle all-poxy, it is all because Of the ozene. If there !s@ drouth, it is ozone. If it pours, it ie the ozowe. The fact is ozonets no good—that is, if there is such a thing as ezone. In our private opinion, ozone is as auch a m) th as Mrs. Gamp’s Mrs. Harris. But if Grone exists it is @ nuisance to be abated. Nobody wants it, or knowa what to do with It. Let the ccientitic chaps who invented the wretched thing just put it quietly out of the way. The defense ‘¢ in the trial of Mrs. Lioyd at Lees- burg, charged with the murder of her dauchter, took the une xpected line of conceding the presence of he body of the daughter Maud, and mainta! that the medicine ad- ministered to the child i. her last illness con- tained arsenic. The attending physician, Dr. Mott, prescribed bismuth for the child, and the experts called for the defense were able to show that this bismuth (prepared by a Philadelphia drug house) really showed traces of arsenic. ‘The quantity was small, but sufficient to explain the presence of the arsenic in the body on a theory consistent with the innocence of the accused. The chemical experts for the prose- cution acknowledged the correctness of the results obtained by the experts for the defense, and that the bismuth really contained arsenic. ‘The bismuth remaining in the possession of Dr. Mott has been procured for thorough scien- tific investigat:on by medical men in Baltimore and elsewhere, aud the results will be looked for with interest. It is believed that arsenic and other poisonous drugs are used in the manufacture of some of the more powerful of the patent medicines, and it would be well if the chemical experts while they are testing the druggust’s preparations of bismuth, would tke in hand some of these patent medicines. Lately a ease occurred in California where a man, of some prominence, barely escaped with life trom strychnine poison- ing. On recovering after going through all the terrible spasms and internal tortae from this Poison, he ascertained that a preparation he had used for rheumatism contained strychnine, and that the sediment at the bottom of the bottle from which he had taken adose was impreg. nated fatally with the dangerous drag. There is nothing more remarkable and touch- ing im bistory than the voluntary exodus of the French inhabitants of Alsace and Lorraine rather than come under a foreign rule. It is estimated that within the last three months two hundred thousand persons have left Alsace, a large portion of them sacrificing nearly theirall of worldly goods, actuated purely by it does not seem thatthe conquerors was exercised in @ way to be onerous, or that they had any Feason to expect anything but kind treatment from their new rulers; and the fact that they were willing to abandon life-long associations and home-ties, as well as their possecsions and means of livelihood, shows a strength of feeling the world has not been prepared to credit the French p: »ple with possessing. The deed ranks with that ef the pilgrim fathers, who, forthe #.ke of liberty of corscience, left home and its comforts and isiendships to dare the perils of a winter pesage of an unknown sea to secka shelter on blea and hostile shore. The ladelpbta Ledger takes ap the money side of the horse-dis ase. There are about nine | millions of borses in the United States, valuea at six bondred and sixty millions of dollars. If but ene cent. Of these should be carried off, maki» 10 horses, it would entail a direct money loss of #5 ,600,009—two per cent., or two deaths ont of every hundred, would bring a lors of over $15,090,000, and three per cent., which is the morte ity In some cities, swells the loss to nea heavy loss of the daily earnings of the vast pro- portion of the horses, that are d'sabled and can- | not work. Such figures may have their uses in rome quarters not yet reached by the disease Humanity should be the only stimulus required im order to ensure the use of such preventive measures as better treatment, leas labor, cleaner stables, Xec., but the money side of the case may reach some people who seldom look at apy other. — see Our recent list of the synonymes for the new horse-disesse was by no means complete. As we present it below, “revised and enlarged,” it ight different appellations: “Epihippic,” “‘Hippo-ma- iemic,” ‘Horse influenza,” “Hippodemtc,” ‘Hipporhimerrhea,” “Sick horses,” ‘“Hippozymosis,” “iquine malady,” “ Epizooti “Epizectic ta@genza,” “Horse pestilence,” “Horse plague,” “Hippo-typhoid- yaryngitis,” “HippomorDific,” “Horse cough,” “Horse bronchitis,” Malarial incubus,” ““Hip- popatbic embarrassment.” Besides these we Jayful allusions “Old epizoot,” “Exercise prometer,’ “Epizoodle- i Corn doctor's and “the epidem. os It appears that one point Bismarck has had in view in the annexation of Alsace is the far therance of the favorite scheme of Prussian diplomacy—the creation of a German route from the North Sea to the Adriatic and the severauce of France trom any commercial domination over 5 ication with Antwerp and Ostend, and when the St. Gothard tunnel through the Alps is fin- “hed, the supremacy of Mont Cenis tannel will +e et an end, and he can travel from the North Sea to the Adriatic wi —+20e- Keeurring z' to the matter of the utter failure of lfe-boat apparatus of the steamer Missouri, rocleed in this column yesterday, it appearsthat the single boat that was made available was not steamer boat at it was @ boat owned by ‘\© passenger who had the skill and courage to ‘it afloat and save a dozen lives. This he did ~ shout assistance from the davits, &c., usually ‘ splayed to lower boats. It is quite evident {there is something radically wrong about ‘se life-siving apparatus—so-called—witn * Lich our pascenger steamers are provided. «s0e- In cons: juence of the epizootic the New York Papers favor the use of dummy engines for the etveet cars.
