The “Missouri” Disaster. The fearful insecurity of life to those who risk themselves on the sea-going steamers is illus- trated by the destruction of the Havana steamer Missouri by fire. Out of eighty-eight persons, * and crew, bat twelve are known to en saved, and these owe their lives to a Passenger, who, in the general helplessness Seemed alone to have the skill and self-pos-es- sion to make one of the boats available for the purposes for which s ‘The same sickenin, asters; that bo the attempt to evident are designed * repeated of previous at was swamped in a, and it is painfally g array of lite-boats tau that the im which are parale sr ocean-going steam- ers to give a sre a deln the case of the pats, capable of or one hantred ere were but ei; for. Yet the only je wasone that lay on deck without davits or tackle to lower her properly, but which was got over somehow and put in condition to carry away enough survivors to tell the rorrowful tale. It is probable that the crew were trained in lowering and managing life-boats, but it is farther evi- dent that there is a fatal defect in the whole steamer life-boat system. Unless the water is nearly smooth, it ra is succesefully launched from a steamer; and when anything of asea is running, as in the case of the Missouri, the crew knowing the impracticable nature of the effort, seem to abancor al! hope at once. The latter capsize or swamp almost inevitably, while the raft, laying flat upon the water, and Presenting a greater surface to it, not only keeps right side up, but is more easily reached from the vessel, especially by women and children. Then the general is to make a strong pull for the governorship next year, and, hay- img *eccred this, will of course hold office for two years, and be jy to take Mr. Sumner’s Place when the term of the latter expires. It is suggested, however, that this plan leaves out of account purposes of the friends of Mr. Dawes, aud the Hoars; and also the claims of the westera part of the state to be represented in the Senate of the United States. It is safe to sy that Gen. Datler w.ll make the contest a very lively one, when the time comes.
