—aoa SSS Largest Circulation im the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: HUBSDAY. +++++-@etober 3, 1872. ‘The Greeley partisans who have the sending of press dispatches from the South, forward a story from Macon, Georgia, to the effect that the negroes there yesterday undertook to take violent possession of the polls; that “a few bouts of fisticuffs occurred in the dense mass, and then a discharge of brickbats came from the negroes, followed by an order icom their leader, eff Long, t> fire upon the whites,” that they did fre upon ths anoffending whites, and that the result was that ‘one white man was killed and some five or six negroes were wound- ed, two of whom are since dead.” It is a re- markable fact that in all these cases related by these partisan telegraphers when the negroes wantonly fre upon the whites, it is the negroes who get shot and killed at the rate of five or six toone of their opponents. Tho colored people there must either be wretched marksmen or their firearms must have a boomerang twist that brings all their bullets home t> dea; destruction in their own ranks. Another cu rious feature of this story is that the negroes, after all this obstreperous mob demonstra. tion, should subside quietly into the defens sive attitude and declare that “they would give up the election, as they had been driven from the polls, and could get no chance to vote.” And again, we are told asa part of this singular story, that — “The negroes massed again at the city hall, where they were addressed by the mayor, guar “anteeing them perfect protection from a trong foree of special police, which had been sworn in for the day, and free access to the polls; but with few exceptions they refused to vote, and many have gone home.” Now the inquiry arises, from whom the negroes were to be “protected,” or why they should need protection? If they were strong enough to undertake to carry things with such & high hand, they certainly could not need to be guaranteed “perfect protection from a strong force of special police, and free access to the polls.” On the whole, we suspect that the Georgia election will not tend to give assurance to the colored people of the country that the Greeley democracy are their “best friends.” ‘The liberals in taking such elaborate pains to show that the President is not a fluent speech- maker are unwittingly doing him great service with the American people. The gift of gabisa very handy thing for a public speaker, a lawyer Ora preacher, though even with those who use the tongue professionally the greatest fluency as an off-hand declaimer is not generally associated with the highest degree of ability. But in an executive officer, and especially the highest executive officer in the nation, there is no gift | S0 fatal or so out of place as a facility of word | Gelivery. ‘There was the case of Andy Johnson. He brought to the White House the unlimited resources of gab that had made him formidable asastump «peaker. He was pertectly irrepress. ible. How he astonished the world by @ mand. din speech on the occasion of the second inaugu- ration of President Lincoln is well remembered; and he had hardly set foot in the White House | before he entered upon that diarrhea of | Speeches that so confounded reporters and | publishers, and which were only minimized in number and quantity when the latter made a desperate stand and refused to print them. It is recorded that in one day Andy delivered no Jess than twenty-seven set speeches to unhappy Visitors at the White House. No poor devil of a postmaster could go up to see about his office but A.J. would back him up in a corner and Proceed to orate to him about the constitution and the state of the nation. It is easy to see, in Teviewin, @ list of our Presidents, that the lightest and the most crotehety and impracti- cal have been fluent speakers, while the ablest have been comparatively silent men. Jefferson and Jackson represented the one class, and Tyler, Frank Pierce and Andy Johnson the other. It is no discredit to President Grant that he ranks with tbe fermer rather than the latter, inhaving the gift of silence rather than the shallow- pated Buency of utterance. According to the Patrict and other reliable confederate papers, the Board of Public Works are importing negro voters for our local elec- tion, and exporting negro voters for the Penn- sylvania elcction on the same day. This is driving a pretty brisk business; bat, like swap- ping the same two jack-knives all day, it is not quite easy to see what is gained by the opera- tion. Now, if the Patriot only would change its Monotonous diet of hash by getting up a cam- paign yarn one degree above idiocy ! -s0e- = Itseems that the Washington and Georgetown Failroad company is requiring its employes to get registered in order t> vote them against the Board of Public Works. Of course it is to be expected that the Board should earn the Oppo- sition of the railroad company by undertaking to make it put its tracks in proper condition, but it is rather hard on the employes of the Toad, who are treated like slaves, and paid slave's wages, that they should also be required to vote like slaves. The citizens’ mas« meet.ng at Lincoln Hall to night should be attended by ail interested in the welfare of the District. Addresses will be mace by Governor Cooke, James Harlan, George Taylor, A. K. Shepherd, Samuel L. Phillips, and others of prominence, and it cannot be doubted that an intelligent and thorough exposition of the condition of District atfairs will be made. It isunderstood that a detailed statement of the operations of the Board of Public Works will be made by Mr. Shepherd. Mesers. Fred. Boswell, Ordway & Co., who have undertaken to sell out the colored people of the District to the Gregley democracy, will not find the shooting of the colored voters at the polls in Macon yesterday an argument in their favor. ——__~-<e--____ Georgia has gone democratic by perhaps tLirty thoutand majority against forty-tive thousand for Seymour in 183. From the man- ner im which the negroes were “ protecte& the polls at Macon it is a wonder the majo! id not rise to twice’ thirty thousand. —__-+<+-___ ‘The Patrict has a long editorial this morning ©n the subject of grave stones, It is pradently axtielpating its party's wants in November. t BES wanted for Bi “bo write a plain haud « WM. is.
