Mr. Henry Jobnson was introduced, and said that two years ago he was in this hall endeavor- ing t> cement the republican party, had been to a certain extent instramental in embering. He brietly spoke of the candi- dates for the House of Delegates, and urged that the voters should give them united support. He remarked that in the Emery campaign his political idol was F. A. Boswell, and then he learned that his idol, so far from baving any particular love for the colored race, was only in forself. He (the speaker) went into the con- vention, and was there asked to vote tor F. A. Bosweil, and he declined and nominated Mr. dobn Thomas Johnson. He then tound that Boswell was in the convention just fis he is now—tor F. A. Boswell. If he nad his choice to vote for the nominee of Ordway and LeBarnes or the nominee supported by the board of pablic works, Le would say the nominee of the board all the time. [Applause.} He defended the course of Gen. Chipman, and pald a high com- | See to Daniel E. Cabill and John W. cKnight. In conclusion he referred to THE GRAY BILL, and said that he had examined it carefully. He asked if the small prope: holders are’ being protected if the laboring meu are to be sent out again with orders payable in groceries, 70 cents on the dollar, as wus the case in the days of Bowen. This would be the practical workingof the so-called Gray bill, which is now being used under the ery of “anything to beat Chipman.” [Applaure.] JUDGE VISHER ON THE CONGRESSIONAL CAN- DIDATES. -Indge Fisher was introduced and commenced by reverring tothe tane—America—performed by the band, and quoted the words: “From every mountain side let Freedom ring.” After referr’ 9g to meidents im American history when freedom was proclaimed throughout the land to all the people except one class, wlio but a tew years ago were made free, he said that one of the principal instruments used in securing theic treecem was Grant. Can you turn your back on him? | Voices.—No.] ~ A few years ago the democracy started cut as a white man’s party, bat they found that they could not fiddle lonzeron that * ing. This time they know that they could not win with a democrat, and they have selected a Greeley man; and there ig another so-called re- publican whom he had heard of asa Greeley man, but who went to the Philadelphia conven- tion, and he supposed he was now for Grant. He had nothing to say perconally against Mr. Hine, for he was a square Greeley man, op- poved to the board of public works. The other one—Boswell—was a political demagogue, who was bot satisfied with having made 30 or 40 thousand dollars as collector, but now wants the honor added. He may carry some votes, but a precious small sum they will add up. [Laugh- ter.) The whole secret is that he is running to defeat Chipman. mo tee deal is said against the board ef public works—they may have made some mistakes, and who has not made them— but with their mistakes they are making the city the most beautiful one in the country. It had been said that he (Gen. C.) w: cate of the board of publie works; that he had taken part as such in the investigation. had not done as he did then, the speaker wou not have considered him a man; he could not h: done less than he did. If Mr. Hine went to Congress be would attack the board of public works. Gen. C. would stand head and shoulders above him, and about forty cubits above Bos- well, who would probably call for astink smell- ing committee, and go for a general smo: out of everybody except Mr. F. A. Boswell, who would like to have all the smell tor himself. He asked if any eslored man coald vote for Bos- well? He did not want him to get any vote but his own, and he did deserve that. Atter Mr. Boswel!’s name bad been mentioned in the convention, Mr. Bar- rett asked and proposed a conference with the democratic convention, and it was voted down; and it was not until after Mr. Hine had been nominated that Mr. Boswell accepted. It was a trick on the part of the Le Barnes convention. The other convention did not nominate a pc )- ple’s candidate, as was claimed, but a Greeley candidate, for the delegates were elected as democrats and Greeley republicans. He (the ps mayer claimed to be the regular nominee of the republican party, and he charged that the other candidates were in @ conspiracy to defeat the republican ticket. He urged that the delegate should be in sympathy with the administration, and if Hiue was clected it would be very probable that Congress would retuse to pay a bill of $3)0,00) for improvements in front of government property, which the hoard of public works intend presenting. It has n rsserted that the debt of the District is 000,000, when it is less than $10,000,000, and more than oneehait of this was bequeathed by the old corporation. that the taxes will be increased, and, in reply, he said that under the old corporation they were taxed 10 cents more, while now these ctapen- dous improvements—paving, sewering, & are being carried on withont an increase of cent in the tax having been made as to the formatior to buy up the property sold for taxes, and denied that h was the case, or that the bill would act against tax-payers.
