EVENING CROSBY 8. NOYES... G STAR -Editor. Largest Circulation in the District ig Matter on Every Pi Page. ASHINGTON OITY: + September 20, 1873, Ww FRIDAY How a German Newsbaper Came Oat for Greetey. The as Mr. Frederick Hassaurek to the Greeicy-Brown ranks has been paffed into a mr important and significant affair than the facts warrant. The history of the ease ig briefly as follows: Ever since the national tiens, and until last week, Mr. Hassaurek the Cincin Yolksblatt, have ¥ poised on the nesibly det sition w as th wiuditions St the ols: no wise changed from the begin- was be maintaine the ¢ the best m ustified in supposing this 9 the end. He in New York, and the balance from mal committee. This , however, to appreciate the patri- nd so the purse was not raised in the stipulated time. Hence the scheme misearried, and Mr. lassavrek proneanced on the stump and in his paper for Greeley and Brown. Just how much that party paid him to get Cown on their side of the fence has not been de- veloped; but all the cireamstances attending the conversion warrant the belief that there ey init. In fact, Mr. Hassaurek is not wae mo in the babit of contributing his services in a atever, with the project, if it {s, of manofacturing the rowdy attack upon the Pittsburg delegation in that city into a the Sun mast see | such @ document that Baltimore un- i for lawlessness of even an exaggerated ved. Itwouldb he great body of res nity to mal in the fa eputat able anc ens of Baltimore the Fespor occurrences that Bave served to give e this bad namo, and yet it seems to us that they hardly appre- ciate th@neeessity that they should take extra pains to frown down and root out the rufianly element that, however small in proportions, is « enough and active enough to damage it in this annoying way. Mr. L. G. Hine is « pleasant gental gentleman and a pretty good lawyer; and Fred Boswell is smart enongh in his way, but neither of them woul! be of the slightest use to the District as its representative in Congress. Boswell’s can- idacy is, of course, simply in the interest of Hine and the Greeley democracy, who hope by re g Boswell to detach some repablican votes trem Chipman. Their project will beof no avail. In view of Greeley’s steady hostility to the District and his pertinacious advocacy of the crezy project of Reavis for the removal of the enpital, the people here are not likely to stultify themselves by electing @ Greeley dele- gate to represent them in Congress. They will doubtless conclude to return their present rep. e, Gen. Chipman, who has done so sdvance our interests in the Nationa’ ature.
