Stephenson detached from the bureau of steam engineering and placed on waiting orders. bis ‘G THE INTERNAL Revenvg Force The Commissioner of Internal Reyenue, on his return here will make preparations for reducing the force of the [Internal Kkevenue department, ae provided by the recent act of Congress. The number of collectors and assessors will be re- duced trom two hundred and thirty to eighty of each. The reduction of bonded officera will ne- cessitate the increase of assistants, in order that the work of the bureau may be properly per- formed. Some few collectors have already re- signed, to take effect on the Ist of Januar: next, when the new law goes into effect. The new law will be applied to Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia first. THE INDIAN OUTRAGES ON THE KIO GRANDE, One of the commissioners appointed under the recent act of Congress to investigate outrages on the Rio Grande, in a private letter to a friend in this city, dated at Brownsville, Texas, August 16, says :—“ We are taking a great mass of testi- mony o ve and importaut character, which J think will be satisfactory to our government. Our small appropriation, however, will not allow us to take one-third the testimony that we could get had we the means to send for persons or to visit various localities. Those citizens who are able to reach us are very grateful for what we are doing. There is no doubt but what there have been many serious depredations coins mitted upon our people by Mexicans and Mex- ican Indians, but it wil! require more money than Congress has fed appropriated to enable the commission to investigate the matter fully and pave the way for a complete sup) ion of raids by these maranders.
