The supreme importance of good, pure lung food for all living beings—the tender infant, the ate caughter, the robust man, and the old, bowed down with years—cannot be too strongly impressed upon the mind. Pure air is not only the best of all blood purifiers, but it is the best Preserver against ill effects from other impuri- ties, and the best of all tonics for weak lungs. ‘The idea, deeply fixed upon the pepular mind, that the only way for the weak to gain strength is through eating and drinking, leads to the in. vention of an endless variety of tempting and over-nutritious dishes, and to the drench- of the stomach with wine and bitters, @ practice is a most disastrous one. Thou- sands to-day are suffering in this way, or by having their lungs both starved and poisoned, while the stomach is stimulated to its utmost, “nd gorged with rich aliments day and night. Yet such often remain pale, weak, and thi and qu«ck doctors urge that more stomach bit- ters be taken to bring them out. They are also usually carefully housed, and directed to keep away from fresh air, from anything like a cur- rent, and are not allowed to take out-door exercise, except on the finest days, and then. only for au hour or less gach-ty, for fear of taking cold. Besides, the kind of exercise taxen ts asvaliy unworthy of the name, for it tegetten consists simply in sitting quiet, in an taey posture, in an easy catriage. This mode is 4q proper for those debilitated by actual disease, but not for the thin, weak, or delicate, who desire to be made strong and healthy. Little by Lttle, day by day, should out: door exercise be increased, until the body becomes pure enongh and strong enough to take care of iteclf. The retorm Suggested in a late number of Applets elative to the manner in which ladies should ride on horseback, and Tecommending that the side-saddle be discard- en, has attracted pretty general comment. It Seems that in o'd times the ladies rode astride their horses, avd therefore shonid the recom- mendation of the Journ! be accepted and our ladies do Ukewise, they would mereiy be reve ing to an old custom. At any rate at least fi young ladies of New York publicly announce their intention to appear in the Central Park on Saturlay of the present week astride of their horses, regular ‘‘man fashion.” They say tuey win e at the F entrance at three a earn- h the emphasis sh to inaugurate the new suevement, to meet them there fn Blooraer, or anyother sppropriate costume at the hour mon- tioned. He says the skirt should be very full, and fall a little below the knee; the rider sh» wear Turkish trowser: gathered at the ankie;a neat high gaiter or zonave bootee; and a jaunty riding hat and pleme. This he thinks would make a costame not only adapted for its purpose, but admirably Pretty and picturesque. -e-- —___ Mr. Boucicault, it is stated, has set sparta certain part of the auditorium of his London theater for ladies unaccompanied by gentlemen. ‘This would indicate a demand for such an inno- vation, and that there are ladies in London, as Well as in the United States, who do not deem it improper to visit places of amusement unat- tended by gentlemen. The only good reason against such a practice is that respectable ladies under such circumstances are liable to insult from the pestilent class of genteel rowdies who frequent theaters. A cotemporary suggests that reform in this direction might be carried still farther, and that certain parts of all theaters might reserved for young men unaccompanied by ladies. It is of the opinion that if these nice young men could be seated all together, with a policeman to keep them inorder, and a fireman to play on them at intervals with a hose-pipe, there is no doubt that our theatres would gain in respectability, and that the comfort of the better part of the audience would be greatly in- creased. s1e2- ‘Startling stories of the inhuman treatment of patients at the New York Bloomingdale lunatic asylum are toid in the New York papers, and an investigation is in contemplation by the author- ities. The evidence already before the public in the shape of aflidavits by victims is enough to prejudice the community against the institu- tion named. It seems that perfectly sane peo- ple have been thrust into this asylam on the | certificates of subsidized physicians to gratify personal spite or to subserve some selfish scheme.
