THE INVITATION OF TENNESSEE TO PRESI- DENT Grant.—The President has sent the fol- lowing answer to the committee from Tennes- sce, Gov. Bard and others, appointed to invite him and his Cabinet to visit Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain. The invitation is not a political one, as the committee is composed in equal proportions of republicans and democrats, but it emanates from the people of Tennessee expressing their desire for a visit from the Pre- sident of the nation: Utica, N. Y., July 3ist, 1872. Hon. Sam. Bard, Wm. Crutchfield, V Rath- burn, and J. J. Bryon, Com. on behalf of the City Council of Chattanooga; H. S. Chamberline and ethers, Com. Board of Trade of Chattanooga GENTLEMEN: Ihave the honor to acknowledge the receipt of the resolutions of the Mayor and Aldermen and of the Board of Trade of the city of Chattanooga, extending to myself and Cabinet an invitation to spend a portion of the summer vacation in their city and on Lookout Mountain. I am not prepared at present to accept either on my own part, or on the part of the Cabinet. But I will, in a'very tew days lay the invitation before the other gentlemen em- braced in it, and will then give his honor the Mayor a detinite answer. it would afford me very great pleasure to visit the people and city of Chattanooga, and I return my sincere thanks to the Mayor, Alder- men,and Board of ‘rade for the invitation which they have given me to do so. With great respect, your obedient servant, U. S. Grant. — see. Mr. Sumner Keriigs To Mr. BLatne.— Mr. Sumner has written a letter in reply to one recently addressed him by Speaker Blaine, in which he says: “You are greatly concerned about the company I keep. To quiet your s0- licitude I beg leave to say that, in joining the republicans who brought forward an origi- nal abolitionist, 1 find myself with so many others devoted to the cause I haveserved always that I had hot missed you until you hastened to report absence.’ He deplores the hostile spirit which has existed the seven years since the war, during which time the rights of colored citizens have been in perpetual question and expressed the belief that a new life and new spirit will exist. He thinks the support of Greeley by the democrats is au assurance that the cause he has £0 constantly guarded is accepted by the demo- crats, and that it is a pledge of trie union be- yond anything in history—a victory of ideas. e accuses Speaker Blaine of ones wo avoid the real issue by holding up the possibility of a democratic administration, and after eulo- fi2'ng Greeley nt some length, says he prefers orace Greeley, with any Congress possible oa the Cincinnat! platform, to President Grant, with his pretensions and’his rings. In conclu- sion he says: “The personal imputation you make upon me I repel with the indignation of an honest man. I wasa faithful supporter of the President until somewhat tardily awakened by his painful conduct on the island of St. Do- mingo.”” He does notjdoubt that when partisan “rtiments are less active Speaker Blaine will regret the wrong he has done him. Merrimon says he will contest the election be- fore the legisiaturc, unless the republican ma- jority is more than’ 1,000. ‘The legislature is demorratic by a majority of 180n juint ballot. The chairman of the republican slate commit- tee estimates the republican majority at 2,000. An associated press dispatch says the demo- crats have fears as the reports of radical gains come in. The democrats have carried an over- wheiming majority of the legislature, and five out of eight Congressmen. THE ARIZONA DIAMOND FeveR.—A second diawond mining company, claiming to be the original discoverers of the new diamond fields in Arizona, which they locate in the foot hills of the Pinal Mountains, has already been incorpo- rated in San Francisco with @ capital of $10,000,000, and propose to dispossess the first incorporated company. BY ASSOCIATED PRESS, New Yor«, August 6—The Tribune now es- timates Merrimon’s majority from its dispateh: which nearly cover the whole of North Carolina, atiou. The World's Raleigh dist es says the elec- tion will be very close; that if Caldwell obtains the same ratio of gain in the counties to be beard from, he will be electe! by a very small yote. Onslow county gives Merrimon a gain of 400, which makes his clances more favorable. The Herald's Raleigh dispatches says it will take the official yote to decide. The democratic and republican gains came in alternately, cans- ing excitement and suspense. If Caldwell is eeclared elected, Merrimon will contest. An estimate made by Mr. Phillips, chairman of the republican state central committhe, giving the State to Caldwell by 1,190 majority, is generally discredited. No confidence is to be placed on reports of majorities on one side or the other. Cobb, republican, has a ——. in the first district of 1,000; Thomas, republican, in the second district, probably has 1,000 majority; Smith, republican, in the fourth district, has 800 majority; Waddell, democrat, im the third district, bas 700; Leach, democrat, in the fifth district, 600, and Ashe, democrat, in the seventh district, and Vance, aemocrat, in the eighth district, are elected by large majorities. WitmincTon, N.C., August 6.—The following ficial majorities:—New Hanover, revised, for Caldwell; Brunswick, 9 for Caldwell: slow, 400 for Merrimon. The official vote of but few counties can be obtained here, as nearly all have been sent to Raleigh. The conserva- tives here are all very hoperul, relying on the western counties to elect Merrimon, Many leading republicans concede Merrimon’s elec- tion by a small majority. The Siar and the Journal both claim Merrimon’s election by about 800 majority. Razicu,N.C., August 6.—Offictal returns to-day from the counties already heard trom change but little in the aggregate estimate here- tofore given. The democrats still hold some 650 on Shipp’s democratic majority of 1570. There are eleven counties to hear from, which coun- ties will hold the yote of 1570. i The republicans are despondent to-day, and the democrats hopeful, both parties figuring with approximating results. Information from the west this evening will doubtless decide the matter with chances, at present, in fayor of Merrimon. ———— +2 —_____ THE ANDY JOHNSON-HAROLD SCANDAL— The Case to be Investigated by the Courts —The Nashville (Tenn.)
