CROSBY 8. NOYES...... Editor. Largest Circulation in the Distriet Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY... July 31, 1872. The Star By Mail. ersons ‘ing the city for the summer, or ls meee can bave Tus Stap mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the Fate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- mess office of the paper. — The Mistake of a Life.time. Mr. Sumner in joining hands with his lifes jong adversaries under the promptings of pique and anger against President Grant, has made just such @ mistake as Daniel Webster made when be imagined that his great name and com- manding abilities would enable him to run counter to the public sentiment of the north. Webster, though the idol of New England, found himself deserted and repudiated in a breath. He never regained a footing in public regard and died adisappointed man. Mr.Sum- ner can see in this his own inevitable fate. All his labored arguments cannot rebut the fact that the victory of the Baltimore ticket and platform will be a victory over every doctrine and tradition of his political career, and over the vital deep seated convictions of both his home and national constituencies. Paradoxical as it may seem Mr. Sumner’s political salvation depends upon the election of Grant and Wilson. ‘The election of the democratic ticket and the resulting preponderance of democratic influence in the counsels of the nation would inevitably result in such a war upon his cherished tenets and upon the republican-anion sentiment of the country as must cause his political suicide beyond ® peradventure. If Mr. Sumner believes that his letter will in- fluence the colored vote in any considerable degree he will undoubtedly find his error. The colored people have an instinct more unerring than reason that tells them there is danger in the pot, for their race, when their old oppressors bave the making of the broth. Mr. Sumner, blinded by his dislike to the administration, may fail to see, but they do not, the kuklax fangs under the lamb like mask of democratic- liberal republicanism. Mr. Sumner’s great name is not one to charm by when it is used to them in behalf of a democratic ticket. Obvi- ously Mr. Sumner’s position to have had any ‘weight should have been taken earlier in the can- Yass, before public opinion had crystalized. His letter is. to be sure, the logical result of his course heretofore, but it is too late now to affect results, and simply amounts to his affixing his signature to bis political death wayant. —-+202- A queer story comes from France to the effect that that country is preparing for another war with Germany. A correspondent says there has been no peace between those two countries since the fall of Paris, but only an adjournment Of hostilities. The government, says the same correspondent, is making strenuous efforts to bring the army up to its fullest capacity; there have been large purchases of horses in Hungary, England and Germany; the workshops for the manufacture of artillery and fire arms are in full biast; Paris is being strengthened by new lines of forts; and provisions sufficient to main- tain a large army aud the citizens for two years have been brought into the capital. The soldiers are under constant and severe discipline, and are kept in camp, away from the demoralizing influences of large cities, and the morale of the army is said to beexcellent. Although the con- dition of France has greatly improved since her late bout with Germany, it is not probable that she wil: be willing or able to cope with the latter country on the battle field for years to come. Besides, Prince Bismarck has a watchful eye on his ancient enemy, and would not be likely to be caught napping. It is fupny to see the Patriot with tongue in cheek and a face ef more or less gravity, accept- ing as gospel Mr. Summer's great discovery that the three million democrats who join a few hundred liberal republicans in the support of Mr. Greeley are thereby ‘‘converted” to be, for- ever, good and true republicans. This, in the language of the renowned Dundreary, would be the tail wagging the dog with a vengeance! Delegates to the national labor party, who lately held a convention in Columbus, Ohio, as- sembled yesterday in New York for conference on the political situation. A portion of the session was devoted to the question of expelling several recreant members, who, it appears, were Sppointed to visit Washington for the purpose of notifying Messrs. Davis and Parker of their nemination, but which they failed to do, andat- tempted to traffie with the ether politicians. It is thought that the result of the conference yes- terday will be the issuing of an address to the party directing it to support neither Grant nor Greeley. After the morning session had ad- jJourned delegates from several of the States, including Maryland, bolted, and calling an inde- pendent conference, denounced the so-called labor reformers as tricksters and wire-pullers. —__-~e--_ _____ Nessvs SHIRTS. We have poison in whisky, and poison, it is asserted, in many articles of food which are daily consumed, and now we hear of poison in our nether garments. A New York paper asserts as a fact that the beautifal gloss on collars and shirts “done up” at the laandries is attributable to a deadly poison— arsenic—and says there is enough poison in one elaborately-starched, glossy-bosomed shirt, if it were taken internally, to cause the death of an adult, and there is every reason to believe that many casesof early decease or premature decay, if properly traced, would be found to have been caused from arsenic pat in their underclothing at the laiindry and taken into the «ystem in the most insidious manner. It calls upon the health Officers for an examination, and demands the arrest of all owners of laundries where arsenic i used for the purpose indicated. ee ——__ ‘Mr, Sumner’s argument that because he was not influenced in his political course by the fact that democrats voted for him for Senator neither will Mr. Greeley, does not hold good. When ‘Mr. Sumner was once inthe Senate he was in- depehdent of the odds and ends of Parties that sent him there, but Mr. Greeley as President must rely on democratic sapport to get on with his administration. John Tyler tried the inde- pendent plan rather unsuccessfully. a ‘The World has # model interviewer. The other day it printed what purported to be a re- port of a copversation with Frank P. Blair, and in yesterday's World appears a le:ter from that gentieman, in which, referring to the ‘ inter- view,” he says he was ‘entirely unconscious of being the subject of such an operation,” al- voys, should be in charge of wemen, or at least subjected to woman’s influence.
