In the conversation Saunders was asked if he thought “the democrats would ever cordially recognize the black man’s righ ¢ Saunders answered that be did; “that the lion shail lie down with the lamb.” The Citizen rep- Fesentative responded rather signidcantly that if they should lie down together about this time, when the lion gets up the lamb will be missing.” @eunders scratched his head and left. ——__-«02- ‘5 in the Stokes case in New York came this morning and annonneing that they were unable to agree upon a verdict were Cischarged—just what might be, and doubtless Was, expected from a jury selected as thisone Was. It was hoped that under the new law of the state, intended to admit intelligent mon into the jury box, the abuses under the old sys- tem would be swept away, but it appears that in its actual working the recent ordinance is no better than the ene it supplanted. In this case ‘st least a week's time was consumed and over ove thousand men summoned at heavy expense to the state before ajury wasselected, and then— suchajury! The very frst man accepted by the defence had no sure knowledge of Fisk, Gould, or Tweed; had beard of Fisk having been ‘ed “on the stairs somewhere,” but thought Little of it, and did not speak of it except, per- haps, to his ow@ family. As Judge Ingraham observed, the examinations were conducted in such @ manner as to exclude 19 out of 2) men who read the newspapers. And then after all, this wearisome and expensive sifting of men results in the selection of twelve men who are either so densely ignorant as not to have heard of one of the most widely known crimes Of the year, or who are so peculiarly constituted that they have not thought whether the crime was an illegal actor not. Why not take twelve men from anasylumof idiotsatonce? It would be quicker and not so expensive. The sooner New York legisiators undo their work of last session the better. According to Judge Ingra- bam the law they passed, by making not only Opinions of the prisoner's guilt or ifmocence, but also impressions and biason the matter, the sub- jects of challenge for principal cause, provided for the exclusion from the jury box of the in- telligent pertion of the community. Mr. Brooks, in his pleasant preface, says the notes which are embodied in this book (and which first appeared in the New York Express) were pencilled on his hat, knees, or anywhere that came handy as he traveled in Japan, China, Ceylon, India, and all the way roand the world, and that they were mailed without being read.
