Sherman Says. ‘The inevitable interviewer overhauled Gene- eral Sherman at Geneva, and the restlt is em- bodied in two columns of the New York World of yesterday. The general seems to have given bisopinion of men and measures on both pt the Atlantic with his accustomed frank- mess acul foree. He said he was struck with the stonliness of Switzerland. “You seem to ben territory at one moment and all b: Out of it the r He was much tmpressed there, and eve ere he went with the im- mensé pains people—the mass of people—take for ther living: the prodigality of effort as con- tracted with the slightness of the reward. Its great principle is, if not exactly = common, at least a kind of equal ownership of the soil. A man on bis coming of age has « certain share of land allotted to him, and when the commu- nity has so increased as to have used up all of its allotable land a new commune is founded ia another district. The facility with which the people obtain a part ownershtp in the land is a very noticeabie thing in Kussia, and it points to ® futere in that country in some respects not unlike that of the United States. The Emperor gave him the impression of a worker, and so with ne ail the sovercigus with wom he came in personal contact. It isa perfect machine of war. The most striking thing about it is the new recognition it has given to individuality in the soldier. Within a few days several drinking fountains bave been put up m Washington in addition to that on the Avenue at 7th street, very mach to the re ief ot nm on and beast. Their crowded con- «htion, however, shows that the number Is stilt inadc«mate to the needs. Elsewhere societies and public spirited individuals have co-operated | with monicipal authorities in furnishing a street supply of pure water. The Drinking Fountain Society of London recently hela its annual meeting, and the report read on that oc- casion gives an interesting account of the op- eraticnsef the association daring the year end- ing March 31, 1872. There are scattered over London over three hundred troughs and drink- ing fountains, which are visited, cleaned and supplied with eups—most of them twice a week, | and many of them daily. Crowds of animals are seen at all hours of the days and night wait- | ing their turn to drink. The receipts of the as- | ation for the past year amounted to $21,165, as follows: Annual subscriptions, ordinary donations 00, and special us, 25,60. The cost of the fountains for repair and water supply averages about $50 a but that of the catt'e troughs vary with their size and locality. The water rate for some of the larger troughs amount to $150 @ year, as many as twelve hundred horses frequently drinking at one trough in twenty. | four hours. | +20e- On the Fourth of July, George R. De Milt, a young man, 19 years of age, residing in Brook- lyn, New York, while eugaged in handling a pistol, shot himself in the abdomen, the bullet remaining among the intestines.
