THE MEMBERS OF TAE CHORAL CIETY are requested to be present EVENING. the 2) instant, ‘Bt their Basinees ins relation to the Excursion will be “Syl at (Bel ms SAMUEL @. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or @Py portion of it, can have Tue Star mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the Fate of fifty cents per month. Orders, aceom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- ness otice ot ot the paper. — The New ¥. York Post doesnot weaken on Gree- ley. If anything it is sharper than ever on the grcat Chappaquack. And, concerning Greeley's cabinet, forecast for him by various ingenious correspondents, the Post points out, first that Mr. Greeley is not elected, and second that should he be, he must perforce appolut a compro- mice cabinet, including a good man or two, Probably, but which must certainly inciac fome bad men to please the “corruptionists. It is difficult, the Post argues, to ses how Mr. Fenton, for instance, conld be kept out, and there would be the southern democrats, the pro- tectionists and the railroad men and steamboat mn and tLieves to be looked after. But this, we Would remind the Post, Would be only the begin- Ringof trouble for Dr. Greetey. The Senate is certain to be republican during the next four Years whatever may be the complexion of the House, and that body would very likely object to some of his pie-bald cabinet appointments. On the whole, the Andrew Johnson ineumbency of the White House was a bed of roses com- pared with what Horace’s uneasy seat there ‘would be, in collision with Congress and the re- publican party, and dependent for support on the democracy, who have not a principle in common with him, as would be speedily demon- strated the moment they attempted to act together. Therefore it is foriunate for Mr. Greeley that the people of the country have concluded not to send him to the White House to be harassed into his grave, as Harrison and Taylor were, by the office-seekers and by the burden of responsibilities for which he is unfitted, The Springfield Republican (Greeley paper) Daively says : “After all that Gen. Farnsworth has said and done, it is not in the least surprising that the Grant party in his district should have con- cluded to try a change of congressmen. For Precisely the same reasons, it wiil not be at all Surprising it the liberal republicans and demo- crats of the district shall conclude that they cannot do better than to take him up, and yf their best to put Lim back in his seat’? prblican is evidently in blissful igno- rance of the gossip of Washington in regard to the doings of the truly gallant general, else it would not have fallen into the blunder of its inadvertent sarcasm upon the “liberal repabli- Cans and democrats’’—the party of pagity and Feforin—who are expected to indorse the said doings of the gay and festive Farnsworth, and toeend thica back to do so some more. It has been estimated that the loss to the n of New Yerk in wages alone by ants, so far, to nearly 0 workmen would have been placed i » to be their own employers. it will be Teadily seen how the benefits might be farther extended by half the sacritices that are required te make ihe strikes a temporary success. Be- sides the direct money loss by the strikes, the “indirect damages” are a serious item, for in y 's have succeeded in kill- ing the goose that laid the golden egg. The brown stone cutters in New York declare that their trade in that city is aimost rained, and what little shipbuilding has been doing there kas, s Meil, been driven away. oe ed in Chicago since the fire These usefal public con- hat each passenger knows €xactiy how m ach room he or she is entitled to. Tho utm rabundance of feminine skirts uese cars interfere with the comfort Under present arrange- he cushions are dirty and dusty, and are depositories of disease, and, besides, one person, male or female, by sitting sideways, not anfre- quently occupies the room of two passengers. ‘Thus, a few have more space than they are entitled to, while others haye to stand in a crowded car in consequence. Why cannot we bave the desired improvement ? —_—_—_—__+ee- The Catholic press is somewhat divided be- tween Philadelphia and Baitimore. The Free- man's Journal, however, a leading Catholic paper, proclaims war tothe knife against the Chappaquack woodchopper, saying : Outside of New York, which is not likely to cast its electoral vote for Mr. Greeley, the ‘en- thusiasm’ tor him is of a very singular charac- ter. Income quarters it is represented by what a distinguished New England democrat is re- ported to have said in elegant language:—‘I am trying to take Greeley. I have swallowed him three times and kept my mouth shut; but every time he comes oP through my nose !? That New Englander will, probably, succeed in keeping Greeley without tent asiaam.’ At the fouth. tome talk of taking him ‘as an emetic!’ Emetics. taken in June, are of a very queer ebaract held till Novembe oe Our respect tor the Boston Peace Jubilee, which survived many shocks and withstood the adverse criticism of envious New Yorkers, gave ‘ay when we found the papers boasting of a ‘‘unique feature of the programme” last Thurs- day, being the introduction of “an infant Prodigy” fire years of age, from Brooklyn, N. Y., who on “his dainty little violin” played ot for Joseph” and “Pat me in my little bed.” No wonder Mauame Rudersdortf “was so vexed that she refused to sing,” and that Strauss was taken with rheumatism in his right shoulder.
