A ride from Washington to Omaha, or ratuer from Washington to the shores of the Pacific, at this season of the year, is one that affords considerable variety, in experiences as well as in scenery; and, for the entertainment of ths can’t-get-aways, it seems only fair that an occa- sional one of the vast throng of travelers should note down a few of the impressions formed on the hurried trip. Not that the undersigned pro- poses to bore the readers of Taz Stax with a regular history of the journey. Nothing of the sort. He only designs to jot down a few notes en route, as time and opportunity allow, leaving to the responsible editor the pleasant duty of interlining, striking oat, or chucking the whole lot into the waste basket, and (o the reader the choice of reading or not, as inclination may Fer Mepictnat anv Fauiny Use. frame shanties. Although travelers westward are spared the Jong dusty omnibus ride which they were for- merly compelled to take from the station in Council Bluffs to the Missouri river, and the ferriage across that stream on the wheezy, dirty, unsafe old steamboat which used to aodaty there, they are still subjected to considerable annoyance at the Omaba crossing on account of the unsettled question as to the real eastern ter- minus ot the Union Pacific railroad. The com- pany claim that it is on the west side of the river, at Omaba, while the public if not the government holds that it lies on the eastern side. and that the bridge over the river is prop- erly a part of the line. Pending the settlement of the controversy, passengers are compelled to recheck their baggage at Council Blais, and also to change cars at that point for Omaha, are obliged to again change cars and again check their b: E alchtpeen. TRE WEATHER AND THE CROPS. In traveling, as in nearly every other phase of existence, the weather and the crops forma staple topic of conversation. I may be pardoned, therefore, if I reter to the subject here, au‘l say that the present season, like every oue that has preceded it, and like every one tha’ ably follow it, has been entirely unparalieied. They are all without precedent for something, This time it is for dry;—at least through the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. In Lilinois, lowa and east- ern Nebraska they have not suffered so much for want of rain; but in the four states first named the drouth has been both prolonged and damaging. The ficlds there are literally parched, thestreams are dried or drying up, the growing crops are scorched and stunted, and in many places the woods were on fire as we passad along. Indeed, unless there comes rain soon, there is positive danger not only that the crops will be a failure in those sections this sea- son, but that we shall have a repetition of the awful conflayrations of last year. In VUhio I was told they had not had what is called a good old-fashioned soaking rain for more than two years. To besure, they have had showers from time to time, which served to keep the sarface more or less moist, and to bring along the an- nual crops of grain, grass, and smail fruits. Butthere have been no long continued rains that go deep down to the roots of tne forests and orchards, and keep alive the sources of the springs. Many persons entertain the gravest apprehensions as to the fature in consequence of this long continued deprivation, and not a few are prepared to accept the theory of the savant Reclus: that we have now actually entered upoo ological epochs of at regular inter- @ earth, and which D, Bible House, Hon dow York Ol AMUSEMENTS, EW NATIONAL THEATER. I do not prop ose to write a history of the great Chicago fire, nor yet will I attempt adescription of the picture of desolation painted by the red hand of flame during those awful October days and nights of 1811. Leaving Washington at 7.45 in the evening and arriving at Chicago at 6 o’clock of the sece ond morning, one has ample time, before leay- ing for Omaha at 10.39, to take a drive through at least a sample portion of the burnt district and see in a cursory way what is being done in the work of restoration. This opportunity of course we availed ourselves of. All through the portions heretofore devoted to business the click aud hum of busy artisans are heard, and the streets are everywhere blocked with teams haul- ing materials for building. There seemed to be no ond to the army of men hurrying along in the early morning with their little dinner pails to engage in the work of raising their chosen city from her ruins, as, indeed, there seems te be no limit to the demands for their labors. By the way, if the coming President (?) would advise the poor people of his over-crowded city to buy a pick or a hod and go to Chicago just now, instead of damning their souls and telling them to go westand buy a farm, it would seem like more sensible advice. But, being a farmer him- self, bis predilections doubtless Incline that way, and thus his judgment is warped. ’I'was Tax TowNsEND Family in DeLAWARE.—AS Ty has been made over the as- sumption of Mr. George Alfred Townsend to cast the six votes of Delaware at Cincinnati, the following item concerning one of his mamesakes may show that the Townsend family is not y at the birthplace of the Wilmingtom Commercial: “In Georgetown, Sussex Co., the home of the retired chief was tion of delegates to the on Saturday.
