EVENING STAR. CRO: r 8. NOYES...... Editor. —=— c ri Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: THURSDAY.......2--. -May 30, 1872. It is very properly urged by the Chicago Tri- dune that, in retaliat.on for the grave offence of the coffin-makers in striking at this inopportune time, it is *e plain duiy of everz man, woman and chiid t> go to bed early, r'se with the lark, stop eating cucumbers, bathe daily, keep a good corscience by going t» church once a Sunday, repair the sewerage, eschew over-ripe vegeta- bles, and keep h's temper sweet, in order that he may be villaimously hes'thy and keep out of the hans of the coffin-makers as long as possi= bie. Any man who will eat green apples or dally with cabbages when the coffin-makers are on a strike ought not {> complain, because he is @reet'y encor-aging them in their unressona- bie pracc‘ces; but, at the same time, he ought not to prejudice the rest of the community by helping to increase their funeral expenses: We trrst that ovr Board of Health will do what isin their power to discountenance this cvffin-maker’s strike, by clearing up all the nuisances about the city. A correspondent points out one of these nuisances in the northern pert of the city, and we have called their atten- tion to another, the pile of offensive manure covering a large area of ground upon the river front, at the foot of 9th street. a The Brooklyn Fagl+ (the organ of tbe Ring) figures up the Baltimore convention and proves to its own satisfaction that Greeley is to be nom_ inated by a surplus of nineteen and two-thirds over atwo-thir’s majority. If the resv't had been announced in round numbers—say twenty for instance—the New York World would have been somewhat ineredulous, but that fractional two-thirds settles the matter, and the World sadly says: “When a journal is so scrupulous in mathematics that it won't lie .or one-third of unit, there i+ no rse in t-ying t> contradict it.” The World, in the same issue, docs a little figuring on its own account, thusly: The num- ber of republicans in the country is estimated in round ficures at 3,300,000, of democrats, 3,000,000. To beat Grint a candidate must be opposed to him who can poll the entire demo- cratic vote anda part of the republic.n vote. A candidate who fails in both these particulars cannot beat Grant. Greeley fai's in both. ——~<ce-___ The Presbyterian general essembly in session at Detroit, Mich., yecterday, dixolved to meet in Baltimore on the third Tuesday in May, 1573. By its action just previous to adjournment, the general assembly disappointed the hopes of the advocates of woman’s progress, who had great | expectations that theexcitement cavsed by Miss | Smiley’s appearance in a Brooklyn pulpit some | months ago would result in the admission of CENTRAL BUILDING ASSOCIATION. © cighty-first monthiy meeting of Csutrat Building Association will be held at the Clambian Taw Huilding.
