The renomination of Grant at Philadelphia is such an assured fact that speculation in ree gard to it has been virtually abandoned, and the chiet interest is concentrated upon the ques- tien of the nominee for the Vice Presidency. | with ceal | Saturday Bight, by, the eldest Kinane a fire One died am hour after the acci- dent, the po and third soon after, and were buried on Sunday. The fourth died Taceday morning. T suit of James Fisk, against the Union Pacific railroad comp: bilier and others has been revived in the United States circuit court at New York, Judge Blateh- ford allowing Mrs. Fisk to be substituted as plaintiz. A Racx took place on the 6th instanton Sam. ana bay between the first cutters of aoe and Nantasket. The distance was th: les. The Nipsie’s boat a im two minutes and fifty-six seconds ahead. S7 The attempt of the Second avenue and Fourth avenue railroad companies to lay tracks simultaneously in Fighty-atxth street, New Various estimates have been put forth as to the chances and strength of the diffrent candi- dates, some of them based upon erroncons data, and it may be well to set forth the situation as developed thus far. The Philadelphia convention will have 734 delegates—714 from the States and 2) from the Territories. Mr. Colfax has, in states instructed and unanimous for him 162 delegates, and enough from uninstructed states to make 282 votes for him on the first W@fiot. The state and territorial de@gations instructed for him are Maine, Vermont, Khede Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, District of Columbia, West Virginia, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon, Montana, and Utah. The delegation from Michigan are not irstracted, but are un- derstood to be unanimous for Mr. Colfax, and he will have uninstructed votes from New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Iilinois, Kansas, California, Louisiana, Florida, South Carolina, &c. The four casting votes given by Mr. Colfax in favor of the civil rights bill seem to have gained for him the active support of the colored people all over the south. Senator Wilson has two states instructed for him, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and considerable strength with the uninstructed delegates. The developed strength of the otner candidates does not thus far place them con- spleuously in the contest with the two above named. There has been some talk of a Penn- sylvania candidate to be insisted upon by that state, as requisite to carry the state for Grant, but the difficulty will be to find a man who is not identified with the acrimonious party squab- bles in Pennsylvania to such a degree as to make a candidacy from there a source of weak- ness rather than strength. On the whole, cool, well-informed politicians around us incline to the opinion that the Presidential ticket will be stronger in Pennsylvania without a Pennsylva- nian upon it. } ‘The “Greeley and Brown Central Club of the | $ District of Columbia,” composed largely of B. | Severron, J. H. Crane, Sayles J. Bowen, J. H. Merrill, T. C. Clayton and J. E. Snodgrass, met last night for organization. As the constitution | of the club provides for twenty-two vice presi- | dents it was found that the membership vas | not large enough to fill that office, and an ad- | journment was made for recruits. The remark- able and rather discouraging fact came out that there was a difficulty in getting any demo- | crats or colored men to accept office im theclub. | Dr. Snodgrass, however, thought he knew a | party who knew a colored man who could be induced to come in. Politics as well as misery makes strange bed-fellows. and it is rather odd to see the names of J. H. Crane and Sayles J. Bowen amicably fraternizing in the Greeley b. When Messrs. Crane, Bowen, Severson, Merrill, Snodgrass, Clayton and the other hemogeneous G. & B. Central Clubists get in | ‘wll blast we shail expect lively times. — Dr. Leas, of Baltimore, has addressed a com- munication to the city councils on the subject of slaughter-honses within the city limits, and it the conclusions he has arrived at are correct, the questions involved should be agitated in this and other cities. He is very decidedly of cpinion that slanghter-houses have a prejusti- cial effect, not only on the bealth of those who live in the immediate vicinity, but also on that of others whose dwellings are at points much more remote. He recommends that no slangh- | tering shall be allowed hereafter either within | the city limits, or along the line of any of the streams that flow inte the city. These views have long since obtained in European cities where abattoirs have been established in which the whole bu of slaughtering animals for | food is conducted under a system of close in spection. see. ‘The eal! for the meeting at New York, on Thursday evening, of free- traders, expresses undisguised regret at Mr Greeley’s nomination by a convention to which hone were called, it says, except those who de- sired a reduction of the tariff to a revenue | basis. It says that at that convention the friends of free trade were betrayed, and it adds that all revenue reformers should feel them- selves perfectly free to support any other ticket “according better with their convictions of duty” than the one nominated in Cincinnati. ‘They announce that they are about to organize for the advancement of their views in the elec- tion of Senators and Representatives in Con- gress. Mr. Bryant will preside at the meeting, which is to be addrewed by David A. Wells, | Edward Atkinson and others. ‘The liquor men in ‘Titinois are organizing leagues to influence the fall election in favor of the repeal of the new punish-the-man-who- sells-the-liquor law; also, to oppose its execn- tion im the meantime. The liquor men in Springfield are making a “pool,” out of which are to be paid all that may be recovered against individuals in suits for damages; but as the law Provides for imprisonment in addition to fines, we don’t see how they are going to make the rool business work tt Miss Tennic C. Claflin now has an opportunity to gratify her military ambition, if she is not particular as to the complexion of her commanil. ‘The “Spencer Greys,” an organizaation of col- ored men, has offered her the colonelcy of a Tegiment of menof thatrace. Asher sister Vic. ison the same ticket with a colored man, Ten- nie will doubtless accept, and give a satisfactory solution to the conundram, female colonel ride astraddie ‘The New York Herald closes a two-colamn editorial review of the political situation with the following statement and prophecy: “Every Way there is & curious contest commencing.
