There is a great | deal of mawkish sentimentality indulged in by | persous of the Vincent Colyer stripe in regard to the “native dignity of the noble sons of the forest,” which can be properly appreciated only by those who have had experience of their treachery, and have been cognizant of the very and ignoble manner in which they brains of helpless infancy or “lift of their older victims. The congress has a great work before it, the neces. sity for which cannot be fully understood ex. cept by those who have made prison life and discipline a study, or by prisoners themselves, who have felt the abuses which philanthropists | are cadeavoring to remedy. Within the past few weeks the telegraph has announced the stabbing by boy convicts of four turnkeys at the New York house of refuge. The New York Journals, in commenting on these facts, agree in attributing them either to a lack or an excess of discipline. Whichever it may be, reform is needed, not only at that particular point, but in prisons generally throughout the world. Inter- est in the prison reform movement is yearly in- creasing, and we yet hope to see some plan evolved which shall mitigate the rigors of im- Prisonment, and work at least the partial re- formation of prison inmates. It seems from the action of the Legislature yesterday that the vexed question of the site for the new Northern Liberty market isto be set- tled im favor of the Corcoran square. If this is one the city will reap the benefit from the voble gift by Mr. Corcoran of the square to the Art gallery. At the same time, it will prebably be found that the site selected is, both for the iresent and prospectively, the best named. Other markets will doubtless be built for the Tae PRESBYTERIAN GENERAL ASSEMBLY, | in session at Detroit, yesterday adopted the re- | porte of the standing committees on ministerial | education and publication, and also the report | on sustentation, which affirms the success of the | past year’s efforts, and commends the object anew.
