CROSBY 8. NOYES......Editor. Largest Circulation in the Distriet | Fae Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY. The heavy rains of Satarday night in some sections of the country—particuiarly to the northward and westward of Washington—ap- | Pear to have checked the progress of the forest fires in New York and Pennsylvania which had resulted in the destruction of millions of dollars worth of property. The rain in this section of country was @ mere sprinkle, and the drought here and in the neighboring counties of Vir- ginia and Marylan is becoming alarming. In portions of the hitherto fertile valley of Virginia they have had no good soaking rains since April of last year. The springs and wells in many places have dried up, and the farmers are beginning to apprehend sarious difficulty in supplying their stock with water. Many are now hauling water for family use, and if they are net soon favored with copious rains, the streams will fail. The grain fields are showing the evil effects, and the pastures look more like the remains of closely grazed fields at the heel of a dry summer, than their accastomed rich and abundant spring verture. The wheat is now growing and will soon head, and if we have no rain, will fati short of a full yield, for the want of strength to fill and ma- ture the grain, in consequence of all the plant food being locked up in the dry earth. ‘The widespread drouth which become more fre quent every year in this country, confirms the theory, also sustained by carefal investigation in France, that the cutting down of the forests lessons the rain fall. The necessity for the pre- servation of the trees is to be seen both in the effect they have upon the fertility of the soil and the climate of the country. It was demon- strated during a series of years in France that more rain fell inthe wooded country than on the plains. These facts should stimulate the tarmers of this country not only to preserve the small and isolated forests still standing, but to Teplant some of those that have been destroyed. in some of the states of the northwest, like braska, a day bas been set apart called “Arbor Day,” in which the farmers and others, all over the state, meet in their respective districts and transplant trees. These are examples worthy of imitation in other sections. The advocates of woman suftrage in Great Tritain are greatly chagrined at the vote on their bill in the Mouse of Commons some three weeks since. They had no hope of passing it, but counted on an increased vote. shows a minority poll of 143 against 151 last year, and some of the champions appear to bave fallen away from the faith. Mr. Disraeli's vote was expected, but his name is not on ether list; nor yet is Mr. Gladstone's. Bat one mem- ber of the cabinet voted for the bill, Mr. Stansteid, but two voted against it, Mr Brace and Mr. Cardwell. The attorney genera! both voted and spoke for attorney general for Ireland both voted and spoke against it. Among conservative ex- tulnisters in the minority were Sir Stafford Northeote and Mr. Ward Hunt, and with them was Lord John Manners. The most telling argument used aga which was not denied, that the great majority ©f women do not ask for the right of suffrage. ‘The indications are there, as on this side of the e bill, while the The list | the Dill was the fact, | | | A NEW WRINKLE.
