EVENING STAR. __GROSBY 8. NOYES......Editor. Largest Circulation in the District | Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDSESDAY..........-...May 15, 1972. Labor strikes are the order of the day on both sides of the Atlantic. In this country New York etty is the center of the agitation, which is mainly to enforce the eight-hour rule, the move- ment in favor of which has made great progress this spring. Over two thousand carpenters and Joiners are now on a strike in New York. They demand $3.50 for eight hours’ work. It seems that the strike has been contemplated by the Carpenters and Joiners’ Union for a long time, and the several societies have been husbanding their resources and preparing for it. The strike thus far bas been peaceable but earnest. The strikers received great accessions yesterday, in- etuding all the men from the shop in Gansevoort street, where an attack was talked of Monday ‘The bosses refuse to give a final answer to the men until after to-nigut’s meeting. The brick- layers will strike next Monday, unless allowed S41 per day for eight hours’ work. ‘The paint- ers’ strike In that city this spring for eight hour= and no reduction was successful, and from pres- ent indications, we think that the carpenters and bricklayers of New York will here- after work but eight hours a day. These three trades ate at the base of the b: ing Interest, and their regulation of the time for “striking” evinces a caretully prepared plan. They were aware that at the present season apital im this branch is screwed up with con- tracts and an attack would leave it no resource but surrender. It cannot be denied that the eight-hour law, although obtaining legally only on government works, has had considerable effect im paving the way for the present spread of the system to private enterprises. The strikes and united trade movements this spring seem to be more formidable and unanimous than they have been at any previous period; and if the movement spreads, as may be expected, we shall see, after a season, what will be the effect of this forced diminution of the labor product of the trades, in regard to which there is now great difference of opinion. ad The two regular party conventions of New | York state meet to-day, the republicans at El- | mira and the democrats at Rochester. These | are among the most important political meet- ings of the year, because they will probably de- | cide the politics of the state at the national election, and New York, with its large electoral vote has great force in the contest. Nearly all the delegates tothe republican convention hare been instrueted to “vote for Grant.” The Fen- ton men have given notice that they will not go | to Elmira, and, therefore, for the first time in | many years, there will be nocontesting deleza- tions in the republican convention. The demo- | cratic convention is an interesting affair, be- | canse strenuous efforts are making to in leading democrats to commit themse! support the Cincinnati ticket in advance of the | national convention, and there will be a strug- gle between the dissentients on this point to | control the party in the state. Contesting dele- | gations go from New York city, but it is under- stood that the Tammany as well as the anti. Tammany delegates will favor Greele: ee A number of correspondents ask that a fal; | and complete exhibit be made by the proper committees of the Grand Army of all money expended in the decoration of the soldiers’ ly graves on the 50th inst. They say that of all the immense sums so generally contributed not a | dollar has ever been officially accounted for. and that charges are loosely made that large amounts bave heretofore been expended for purposes entirely foreign to those for which they were given. They claim that they have a right to know the manner in whieh their dona- tions are expended, and their demand seem: reasonable. The committees of the Grand Army who have expenditures in charge can cer- tainly bave no objection to giving an account of their stewardship, especially when their report will satisty donors that their contributions have been judiciously expended. tallation of the new ; Tammany s3- ce in New York Monday even- ia letter was received from Governor *man, in which he said that while he feit bighty honored by being elected to any position by any body of bis fellow citizens, still, con- sidering his position, he thought it- would be improper for him to become a member of any local organization; therefore, while he thanked the society for the honor which they had kindly conferred upon him, he would respectfully decline. This caused mach excitement, and Mr. Chandler called on the society to rebuke the Governor, but they thought it better to pocket the affront, and the subject was finally laid on the he table. +20e- The Canadian Methodists wottd not | not be averse to the annexation of the Domizion to the United ‘States, judging from the views expressed by one of them in the Methodist Gereral Conference in New York yesterday. The Rev. Dr. Wild, del- egate from Canada, stated to the conference that the Methodist Episcopal church of that place would prefer a union with the Methodist Episcopal church of the United States er than with other Methodist bodies in Canada under their recent relations with Engtand, and that the church was growing politically and re- Ngiousty tired of the interference of England. The speech elicited great applause. Mr. Greeley has withdrawn from the editorial management of the New York Tridune. The Loutsville Courier-Journal bas been advising | U that course ever since he was nominated, be. cause “his editorial duties interfere with his presidential prospects.” As that paper an- ounces, however, that it is playing “the ad interim game, by which we are for Greeley until we see something better in sight,” we do not think the candidate thus favored is under any great obligaiions to it. —-see- From Mobile have the intelligence that the county convention held there on Monday last passed a resolution deploring the removal of Hon. Willard Warner from the office of collector of that port, and asking his reinstatement there- n. Whether this request be granted or not, this handsome endorsement is a high compliment to Mr. Warner, and one which must be in the highest degree tifying to to that gentleman. Wrox Dip He Mzras?—In “raising the haic” of that recreant Tammany brave, in his speech ‘the other day, Mr. Voorhees, it will be reme dered, remarked in reply to # statement made by Mr. Roosevelt that that gentleman had been consorting with lars, or words to that effect. ‘Who was meant by this remark? been Crane & Co? eee iibtiisi ‘The National Union Leagae of America will meet im Philadelphia to-morrow.
