On Saturday night a most horrible tragedy was enacted in East Baltimore. The victim was Mrs. Emma Laura Wilkinson, and the min who deait the murderous blows was Joan W. B. Wilkinson, her husband. They resided in a small but quite neat and camfortable house on | McElderry street, between Caroline peel oe streets. Vilkinson is a y man, a, about | twenty-eight years, and has ‘been married ave years. He is a wood-tarner by trade, but owing | to failing health he has not worked at this busi- | ness for @ year or more. Some mouths since he prostrated by a severe spell of sickness, which seriously affected his eyesight. although he is very far from being biind, as has been re- ported. “He can distinguish objects very well with one eye. Mrs. Wilkinson was a robust, handsome young woman, in her twenty-third year. She was the daughter of the late ben). min J. Clarke. a gentleman well known ai much respected in East Baltimore. At the time of bis death he was one of the « of wood. His widow (Mrs. Mary Jane Clarke) resided with her daughter, and was sleeping in the house at the time of the murder. THE AWFUL DISCOVERY. After seven o'clock yesterday morning Mrs. Clarke, after having prepared breakfast, went up to her daughter's room to waken her and her husband, as was her custom. When she opened the door a horrid spectacle met her gaze. i, but the light had he was a coll. ghastly corpee. There were frightful gashes in her cheeks and on both sidesof her heal, aud her threat was ent from eartoear. JEALOUSY THE PROBABLE CATSE. As has already been stated, Wilkinson had been in bad health for some time, and had not been able to work at his trade. He formed a partnership with Wm. T. Griswoid, and they went into the huckstering business. Wilkinson found the horse and wagon and Griswold at- tended to the buying and selling. The heise was kept at Wilkinson's stable. This partner- ship was the beginning of an intimacy between riswold and Wilkinson's family, which, it is aid, brought much unhappiness to the House- hold, Her friends say that he had no canse Whatever for his sispicions,and they further allege that he was cross andoften treated her harshly; they never separated, however, and on the night he murdered her she was siceping in his bed. Griswoid came to the house inthe morning, and on hearing of the murjer was greatly affected. A woman who passed him, as he was crying, accused him of being the cause ot Mrs. Wilkinson's death. A CUP CONTAINING POLSON. There was a cup on the mantel, in the room in which the murder was committe, containing arsenic. It is not known whether Wilkinson took any of it or not. Some persons think that it was put there to suggest the inten cide. and to give rise to the presum; the murcerer is insane.
